County vets go nap!

Pembrokeshire Over 45s 5 - Merthyr Tydfil Over 45s 0

Venue: Goodwick United.

Referee: Adrian Harries.

Micky Ellis in controlPembrokeshire Over 45s showed their real footballing pedigree as they entertained their counterparts from Merthyr Tydfil and after being a goal ahead at the interval came away with a superb 5-0 victory.

Player/manager Bob Nelson was able to select from his strongest squad ever as Des Nicholas and Darren Thomas slotted in well at full backs alongside regular central defenders Brian Morris and Glyn Ruloff

They combined so well that goalkeeper Steve James admitted to PembrokeshireSport.co.uk in his usual post-match analysis that he wasn’t called upon to make a single real save and even considered going out on a few attacking sorties late in the game – but was ordered to stay still by manager Nelson!

Mickie makes class pay off

Pembrokeshire took the lead in that first period when the ubiquitous Bernie Armstrong found space wide out and put in a telling cross so that Mickie Ellis could tap home past the bemused Merthyr keeper. They might have doubled their lead as Nicky Beavis blasted in a free kick which slammed again the crossbar and left it vibrating for some time – but the warning signs were there for the visitors as the home midfield quartet of Micky Ellis, Jeremy Morris, Gerald Hicks and Micky Algieri got on top so that front men Beavis and Armstrong had chance to get into the danger zone.

Goals galore in second half

It was Armstrong who doubled their lead from an Ellis cross which gave Armstrong a simple tap-in before Armstrong returned the favour with a good cross which allowed Ellis to show why he was the best attacking header of a ball during his era as he used his spring-heels to out-jump his marker and ram the ball home with his forehead.

Armstrong was again involved with the fourth goal as he his pin-point cross gave Colin Harding, the well-known judo black belt, the chance to head home from close range at the far post.

Micky Beavis finished the game in real style as he blasted a right foot shot into the top corner of the net and both teams rounded the afternoon off well with good food at the Glendower which was provided by Bernard Jackman.
