Abi thinks Joe Allen is a
key man at the Liberty Stadium
Following the departure of Leon Britton in the summer, much speculation surrounded who would step in to fill the void left by the influential midfielder, writes Abi Davies.
With no obvious like for like replacement lined up, Brendan Rodgers initially looked to Mark Gower and Andrea Orlandi but neither was suited to this defensive role - therefore Rodgers opted for Joe Allen to step in as holding midfielder after his return from a summer shoulder operation to his shoulder.
Over the past few weeks, the 20 year old Narberth product has stamped his authority on this position, and has quickly become a key feature in the Swansea City side- finding himself heavily involved in a lot of our build up play; his talent would not look out of place at Premiership level.
Early start and Welsh recognition
Joe has been on the books at Swansea since the age of nine, going on to sign his first professional contract in 2007 he started to enjoy regular game time in the 2008-09 season under then manager Roberto Martinez. The youngster’s talents and potential didn't go unnoticed at international level either, establishing himself as a regular feature in the Welsh Under 21 set up by Allen before he received a call up to the senior squad and made his début in 2009 against Estonia.
Real strengths
Joe has many attributes which help make him such a formidable player in the Swansea City squad. Not only does the midfield have more shape when he plays, but his control, awareness, ability to create a counter and his off the ball movement are just a number of characteristics which show that the Welsh international really does have the full package.
Although just 5 ft 6” in height, Joe Allen shows no fear of getting stuck into challenges and has the determination and skill to emerge with the ball and with his quick thinking brings other players into the passage of play. Also, despite numerous opponents towering above him, Joe will shoulder off challengers in order to retain possession and provoke an attack.
At just 20 I feel Joe Allen is one of the up and coming stars of the future and will be surprised if he does not get a taste of Premiership action within the next few seasons.
