Rugby Preview for fixtures for

30th October 2010

Welcome to the third week of our predictions and it is nice to report that in the first two weeks we achieved identical results, with nine correct forecasts each Saturday and two games incorrect.

Our illustrious web manager Mark Vincent, who puts great store on such statistics, calculates that this gives us a percentage of 81.81 (recurring). Now that seems good enough for us but we aim to try and improve over the next few weeks, so he can get his calculator out again and really enjoy himself!

Division One (West):

Bonymaen v Whitland
Whitland face a tight tussle if they are to make it five wins in a row as they travel to take on a Bonymaen side who have exactly the same number of wins, draws and losses as the Borderers – and even the same points. Verdict: It will be a big challenge for Whitland and I hope they prove me wrong because I think they will be edged out!

Narberth v Bridgend
A real top of the table clash as Narberth entertain table-topping Bridgend, who currently hold a 100% record after eight games. The Otters have won six games but lost two out of their previous three so need a real boost in confidence. Verdict: Narberth are capable of winning this but only if their pack gets on top early – so I have to go for Bridgend in a tight finish!

Division Three (West):

Gorseinon v Crymych
Can Crymych maintain their proud 100% record against a Gorseinon outfit which is in eighth place but is traditionally strong at home! Verdict: I think the Preseli Men will make it nine on the bounce but they will need to play much better than they did against The Bont last Saturday.

Swalec Plate Round One:

Haverfordwest v Newcastle Emlyn
A really interesting Swalec Plate first round match as Haverfordwest entertain a Newcastle Emlyn side which is currently bottom of Division Two (West) with only one win from eight outings. The Blues are seventh in Division Three (West), with three wins and a draw alongside four losses – and they have home advantage. Verdict: It will be interesting to see if there is a gap in class between the sections and on this occasion I suspect there is – and Emlyn will ease through.

Swalec Bowl Round Two:

Fishguard v Cardigan
Another interesting clash between teams from different sections as Fishguard (Division Five) entertain Cardigan (Division Four). The Seagulls have won five out of six games whilst the Teifisiders have done well to pick up five victories and two defeats in a tough division. Verdict: The form book says Cardigan and I have to go for them, but won’t be surprised if Steve Jenkins and Co upset the applecart!!

Llanybydder v Pembroke
Pembroke are currently top of Division Five (West) but travel to take on Llanybydder, who are fourth a division higher and who have earned five wins in seven matches. The Scarlets have only lost once in seven fixtures and are capable of beating this opposition on the day. Verdict: I would love to see Ossie Boswell’s boys go through but this might be just a little too much for them.

Pembroke Dock Quins v Milford Haven
Milford travelled to Bierspool for the opening league game of the season and came away with victory, despite the fact that they were short of a number of key players. They return for this Swalec Plate match having beaten Neyland last Saturday whilst the Quins lost at home to Llanybydder. Verdict: The Quins have a young inexperienced side but could still win this local derby – although I still think the Mariners will have just a little too much fire-power for them!

Pontyates v Neyland
Neyland have had a poor start to their season and are currently bottom of Division Four (West) after losing all but one of their games, but Pontyates are anchored at the foot of Division Five (West), having lost all seven league games. Verdict: This is a match that the All Blacks must win and hopefully get back to winning ways because they shouldn’t be where they are at present!

Tenby United v Llangwm
This should be the day’s banker bet since Tenby United are top of Division Four (West), with only one defeat in seven games and heap of points, whilst Llangwm are seventh in Division Five (West) with only three wins alongside four defeats. Verdict: The Seasiders to withdraw the Wasps’ sting in the first quarter and then move comfortably through.

Tycroes v St Davids
St Davids travel to Tycroes, who now play their rugby in Division Five (South-West) and have lost all seven games to hold up the rest. The Saints have only played five games so far and won the first three so they should start as favourites in this cup encounter. Verdict: The Saints to march through to the third round, if they have anything like a full squad!
