Helmut Reinhardt More mayhem in local sport!

Helmut hurts his foot after the match . . .

Football might be a long way off at the moment but I thought you might like to hear a story about popular local referee Helmut Reinhardt dancing around the changing room after the under 19's game between Llanelli and Newport YMCA at the end of last campaign. Whilst getting changed after the game he stood on his own bare foot whilst wearing his football boot on the other one. The language was blue, and so was his toe. Perhaps it happened while he was pondering his decision to send off the Llanelli defender late in the first half and might have been retribution perhaps. Be that as it may, Helmut will be back again next season and enjoying his football, especially since Germany beat England in the World Cup!

. . . Whilst Bernie gets black and blue at paint-balling ...

Bernie ArmstrongAlso spare another thought for a football manager in Bernie Armstrong, the equally well-known manager of Goodwick United, who joined Fishguard under 14s rugby run by Peter Evans and Adi Lewis as they went paint-balling near Cenarth Falls – and Bernie fell victim to a few shots which left him black and blue.
The group, and another with them, were warned about firing too close, and our Bernardo survived three rounds without being shot once, rolling in mud and generally having a good time.
In the final round he was well ahead and shot an opponent just as four blows of the whistle marked the fact that the game over – but the eager feller didn’t hear the whistle and shot Bernie several times on arm and back. He was profoundly sorry but Bernie had several bruises on arms and back and was not amused, and indeed was too sore to do well next day in cricket (at least, that was his story!)
With regard to the rest of the parents, Roger James won the award for being shot the most whilst Dai Hayes was too canny to get shot too much – and Bernie definitely had the biggest bruises!

. . . And Gary gets a black eye during the match ...

Gary DawesAnother well-known character in local football is Gary Dawes, the Hakin United manager who earned the reputation as a real battler when he was bossing the midfield for the Vikings. Gary is certainly in the veteran’s stage now but showed that he can still play well as he turned out late in the season against Tenby, playing the whole of the second period after initially putting his name on the team sheet as a nominal substitute. He also earned a memento of the match as he sustained a nasty black eye but battled on, refusing treatment from the trainer – and had a real shiner next day. But he was able to chuckle about it when I met him a few days later and I still say he did really well to play for half the match at nearly 50!

Ben’s in the right village but at the wrong place of worship

Ben FieldDan and Ben Field are very good cricketers at Haverfordwest, as was their father Micky before them, and all three were due to meet up on a recent Sunday for Dan’s baby’s christening, which proved to be a little eventful for Ben.
Ben thought he would be in plenty of time as he arrived at Spittal Church so he was a tad surprised to find the service had started, but he accepted a hymn book at the door and quietly sat at the back to avoid any disturbance. It was only when he looked up that he realised he couldn’t see Dan, Micky or any of the rest of the family – and it dawned on him that he was in the wrong church.

So Ben crept out to his car and as he drove through the village he was initially told by someone that there was no chapel in Spittal and then someone else told him that there were two chapels, to confuse the issue even further. But our Ben is nothing if not a trier and he eventually found Zion Chapel, parked the car up and slid quietly into the back seats. There were a few quizzical eyes raised because he was slightly late for the start but when he related the saga to the family afterwards there was naturally a lot of laughter – and Ben will remember that particular family christening for a long time to come!
