Vicky Travers-Milne Vicki rides the waves all over the world

With Pembrokeshire renowned for its beaches, it’s no surprise that the sport of surfing is thriving and this month we caught up with Vicki Travers-Milne of Haverfordwest, who’s been flying the flag for Pembrokeshire surfing across the world and is considered to be one of the top female surfers in our county.

Much travelled lady

Vicki, who currently works as an activities supervisor in Narberth’s Bloomfield Centre, began surfing at the age of 17 on Newgale Beach. Twelve years on and with a Welsh surfing title under her belt, she can still be found surfing at Newgale and enjoying the best of what Pembrokeshire has to offer. Her love of the waves has also taken her as far as the Dominican Republic, Hawaii, New Zealand and Mexico, and while at home here in Pembrokeshire, Vicki’s favourite place to surf is the secluded beach of Pen Y Cwm, where there is a good break and beautiful scenery.

Trophy-winning surfer

Sponsored surfer Vicki competes in competitions across the country and over the May Day bank holiday she entered the Welsh National Championships in Freshwater West where she was well placed in the women’s competition. She first won the title back in 2003 and continued to show her consistency in top competitions by winning the Elusive Challenge in Porthcawl three years later.
Although surfing is still a predominately male sport, Vicki says she’s always felt welcome in the water in Pembrokeshire and admits that sometime guys make way and give her waves.

Sound advice

Vicki’s advice to any girls thinking of taking up the sport is to give it a try. Book a lesson with one of the great surfing schools in Pembrokeshire and learn the basics. She adds to be confident in your own abilities but always respect the sea as it can be a dangerous environment.

It is easy to see how well Vicki knows what she is talking about and PembrokeshireSport.co.uk salutes one of the foremost surfers in the county.
