Cresselly are the 2010 winners of the DR Morris Cup after beating Llangwm by eight wickets at Oatfield Park, Burton, after gaining a first innings lead of 62 which proved too much for Llangwm to pull back.

Both teams agreed that the toss would be vital on a damp pitch and Cresselly skipper Simon Cole was pleased to ask the opposition to bat first – and Llangwm were soon in trouble at 8 for 5 in five overs as veteran Cresselly bowlers Lyn Richards and Richard Harris exploited the conditions to the full as their combined eight overs produced three wickets (and a run out) for only eight runs! Skipper Cole also grabbed an early scalp and at 8 for 5 it was evident that Llangwm were on the rocks.

Dire trouble

Harries struck early as he had Andrew Harries well caught by Richards, running back at square leg, and then had Will Beresford caught behind by Neilson Cole from the faintest edges, so both main run-gatherers for Llangwm had departed for ducks. Richards took a good return catch to shift Luke Brock and Gary Phillips was bowled by Cole – and to make matters even more dire, Matthew Kiff was run out in a total mix-up as the pressure grew.

Good fight back

Llangwm needed a big performance from someone and found it in the form of young skipper Chris Inward, who made Cresselly pay for an early dropped catch by launching three fours and four big sixes before he was well caught at point by James Venables off Morgan Geldenhuys, with his 46 runs coming off only 38 deliveries.

James Lewis and Richard Brock both hit sixes in a late drive for runs and Llangwm ended up on 90 for 8, far less than they would have hoped for at the start but a creditable total in the circumstances.

Excellent start for Cresselly

In sharp contrast, Cresselly made a very good start to their reply, with Phil Williams and Andrew Harris running well between the wickets and punishing anything loose so that they skated past 50 before Harries was eventually caught by keeper Gary Phillips off Darren Brick for 25 (two fours and a six). They reached three figures before Phil Williams was caught by Beresford, again off the accurate Brick, for 56 (five fours and two sixes).

From there it was a run chase by Cresselly, with Ryan Lewis belting three fours in his unbeaten 33 as Chris Inward claimed 3 for 16 in his spell of four overs. He might well have claimed a deserved hat-trick as he bowled Adam Chandler for three runs, had Julian Arthur well caught first ball by Chris Thomas at long on, but Lewis survived a dropped catch from the next delivery!

Flying start for Llangwm

Llangwm knew they needed a flying start to their second innings and that is just what they got from openers Harries and Beresford as they sped to 45 in only five overs. But Harries was hindered by a jarred back and was bowled by Ryan Lewis for 15 – and worse was to follow because from the very next ball Beresford, who had two fours and two sixes in his 25, was run out by a superb piece of fielding from Phil Williams, who had just one stump to aim at and hit it!

Luke Brock soon followed and although Chris Inward (18), Gary Phillips (16) and especially Matthew Kiff (25) tried hard to increase the run rate they had to settle for 129 for 9 as South African pace man Geldenhuys grabbed 3 for 23 and Simon Cole supported with 2-24 alongside Ryan Lewis’s 2 for 15.

Easy target

A target of 67 for victory was unlikely to trouble Cresselly’s batting line-up and although they lost Andrew Harries and Simon Cole to stand at 26 for 2 in nine overs it was easy for Phil Williams (28 not out) and Adam Chandler (19 not out) to see them through with eight wickets and six overs in hand.

Congratulations and thanks

Skipper Simon Cole received the magnificent DR Morris Cup from Graham Morris and Pembroke County Cricket Club chairman Trefor Evans, who congratulated both teams, umpires and scorers on the way that the game was played by both teams, thanked the Morris Family for their continued support, Burton for providing the field in beautiful condition, and the ladies for an excellent tea!

Winning captain Simon Cole echoed those thanks as he congratulated Llangwm and his own team, and opposite number Chris Inward was deservedly names as man of the match by adjudicators Brian Griffiths and Graham Morris.
