Fishguard and Goodwick Cricket Club are the 2010 winners of the Alan Brown Cup after they beat Llechryd in an entertaining final at Whitland of a popular competition which was once again organised by the Pembrokeshire Association of Cricket Umpires and Scorers, and generously sponsored by the Webb family of Tavernspite Garden Centre.

That the game was played at all owed a great deal to the fortitude of the Whitland ground staff, and umpires Steve Blowes and John Austin, since the wicket had been covered and once the rain drifted away the match was able to get under way, albeit with a late finish.

Leading the way for Fishguard was batsman Kevin Bowen, whose innings of 91 and 20 earned him the man of the match award from Mr Barry Webb, whilst Rhys Dalling and skipper Ben Watson gave great support with four wickets apiece in the second innings which meant they only needed 85 runs for victory, with Dalling belting 34 not out to see his side home with seven wickets and eight overs to spare.

Rhys Beard (five boundaries in his 42)Llechryd set challenging total

Llechryd’s ‘big guns’ weren’t quite able to match the opposition, however, although Steve Curran and Matthew Fraser gave them a good start with 46 runs before Curran was neatly stumped by Vaughan Davies off Nigel Morgan’s bowling. Fraser (two fours and a six in his 35) and Rhys Beard (five boundaries in his 42) ensured that Llechryd would set a challenging total but both were run out as the pressure built up.

Steve Smith chipped in with 16 runs but Whitland skipper Ben Watson grabbed two wickets and Rob Couzens also bowled well to restrict Llechryd to 125 for 6.

Dave Haynes - bowled by Steve Curran for 16

Bowen blasts quick runs

Kevin Bowen sets off . . Dave Haynes and Kevin Bowen opened for Whitland, and the former kept the scoreboard ticking over for his 16 before he was bowled by Steve Curran, who also removed Sam Kurtz for a single.

But Bowen defied sore ribs to increase the tempo to such an extent that he hit five big sixes and five fours as his side close in on the Llechryd score – and a century seemed on the cards but when he was on 91 he went for one big hit too many and was bowled by Rhys Beard. Nigel Morgan and Watson made sure that the momentum was maintained and so Fishguard went into tea with a 20-run lead.

Dalling does it for Fishguard with the ball . . .

Llechryd knew that needed a good start to their second innings if they were to do well but Rhys Dalling had other ideas and the talented sporting all-rounder raced in to dismiss Fraser, Beard, Steve Curran and Graham Keen for only 20 runs. Nigel Morgan kept things tight at the other end before Rob Couzens bowled the dangerous Steve Smith and dived forward to take a return catch to dismiss John Curran – and the writing really was on the wall for Llechryd. Watson kept plugging away at the other end and finished with fine figures of 4 for 28, including top-scorer Adam Maerhlein for 23 runs.

. . . and with the bat too!

Needing just 85 for victory, Fishguard lost Haynes, adjudged lbw to Beard for 4 runs, before Bowen (four fours in his 20) and Kurtz (three boundaries in 14) counter-attacked and took play into the late 30s – but then both fell and Llechryd could see a glimmer of light. But then Dalling strode to the crease and showed his full array of shots as he stroked six boundaries en route to his undefeated 34,, including the winning hit as Watson was appropriately at the other end.
