Kirsty follows the Lewis family tradition
At just 12 years of age Kirsty Lewis is following her older sisters Hayley and Hannah as a very talented sporting all-rounder from the quiet hamlet of Milton, near Carew, inheriting her love of football from dad Mike, who played Welsh Premier League and Welsh League football, and is the current manager of the successful Tenby team in the first division of the Manderwood Pembrokeshire Football League.
But Kirsty is also a very useful netball and hockey player, taking part in both sports at Greenhill School, and already having played for Pembrokeshire in both, plus West Wales in netball, and currently vying for a place in the West Wales Squad in hockey, too.
Football success
Kirsty plays regularly in football with Manorbier under 14s under the watchful eye of Imelda Rossi and normally plays centre midfield but readily admits that her favourite part of the game is covering back to help the defence, where she can use her tackling skills to the full. She has been chosen as captain there and takes very seriously her helping out in the warm-up and giving the team a pre-match pep talk!
But she has also played for the under 16 team alongside her older sisters Hayley and Hannah when they travelled to Belgium and Aberystwyth to play in tournaments and her ambition is to make it to the Welsh under 16 squad, which means that she has plenty of time yet to reach that target.
Goals galore in hockey
On the hockey front, Kirsty likes playing at centre forward in the school team coached by Miss Reynolds and has scored plenty of goals to earn selection for the Pembrokeshire squad run by Miss Reynolds and Miss Hurlow. They recently attended a tournament in Swansea and won that so now they compete next in the same sort of competition for South Wales, hopefully to reach the Welsh Final for their age group.
West Wales’ netball player
Not content with that little lot, Kirsty also plays at centre for the school team and has also turned out for the Tenby Sharks at senior level, which was quite hard but a good experience for her in the game. She already represents the county in a team organised by Mrs Truman and was recently selected for the West Wales squad after attending training sessions in Llanelli. Her sporting involvement means lots of travel but that is where mum Carol comes in because she does much of the taxi work.
“Mum and dad are brilliant,” says Kirsty, “they make sure I am where I am supposed to be all the time.”
