Hayley’s doing well in several sports

Hayley LewisHayley Lewis is the eldest of three sisters who are excellent all-round sportswomen and are following dad Mike in playing football, but also doing well in other sports, with Hayley playing netball for the Pembrokeshire College Academy team and a useful hockey player, when she can fit it in to her crowded itinerary.
She currently plays as a centre back with Manorbier alongside sister Hannah, Molly Furnival Doran, Angharad James, Ffion Ashman and Angharad Jenkins, to name but a few – and also doubles up with the Pembrokeshire Ladies’ team which is coached by Gerry Rigby and plays against the likes of Swansea City (lost 6-0), Newcastle Emlyn (won 7-0) and Cardiff City (still to play them!)
She started out with the junior boys’ team at nearby Carew when she was ten and played there until she was no longer allowed because the sexes were no longer allowed to compete against each other but had to go their separate ways.

Success with Panthers and Manorbier

Hayley then joined the Pembrokeshire Panthers, who played at Clarbeston Road, and the same girls are now involved at Manorbier, where dad Mike doubles up as coach, as well as being manager of the Tenby AFC men’s team. With the Panthers and Manorbier she was a key member of the team which travelled to play in a top tournament in Belgium and in the first instance returned with a winners’ medal – and were runners-up last season. They also did well in the renowned annual tournament in Aberystwyth as they took on teams from all over the UK and as far afield as the United States.

International ambitions

Last year saw Hayley drafted in for Welsh Regional Training alongside Molly Furnival-Doran and Marie Griffiths at Cardiff and Treforest and if you ask he what is her ambition in sport it would be easy.
“I’d love to play football for Wales,” she says, “and I am ready to work hard to achieve that ambition.”

College Academy netball

Outside of her football, Hayley is also a useful netball player and she plays regularly at Pembrokeshire College for the Academy team newly-coached by Alice Watts.
“We train for three hours every Monday and Friday for three hours and on Wednesday afternoons we play against other colleges from all over South Wales.”
Hayley plays wing defence and enjoys the speed of the game and all its twists and turns because it helps her with mobility and fitness for her football.

Hockey, when time allows – and future hopes

It will come as no surprise to read that Hayley is also a more than useful hockey player and used to represent the county schools at right half – but has recently found it nigh ion impossible to fit this sport in alongside her football and netball, She does attend training in Fishguard on Monday evenings, when her other interests and college work allows, but it currently takes third place in her sporting pursuits.
So what of the future? Hayley clearly loves her sport and will continue to work hard at her skills, fitness and techniques.
“I just want to enjoy myself,” she says, “and that Welsh cap would be great in football.”

There’s no doubt that Hayley Lewis is already on the road to success – and we wish her well in her future aims!
