Well done Sport Pembrokeshire – and keep up the good work!
This month it’s nice to move away from rubbish like the antics of John Terry and a former hero of mine, Tiger Woods – and report on some people in our county who are making sure that exciting sport and leisure activities are available for children at comprehensive and primary schools.
The staff at Sport Pembrokeshire are a dedicated bunch under the watchful eye of John Deason and people like Ben Field, Russell Jones and his namesake Alan, plus Angela Miles (disability Sport and Hockey Development), who all work full-time as Sports Development Officers at County Hall alongside Lois Hilling as a part timer, plus the other part-timers who take a specific sport and have as their role to raise standards and encourage as much participation as possible by their positive and enthusiastic approach, and who also act as peripatetic PE teachers.
Golf flies the flag
For example, in a brief recent chat with Alan Jones, easily one of the best golfers to come out of Pembrokeshire over the last two decades, he was able to show me the work being undertaken at schools to develop the game. Matthew Rees, the assistant professional at Haverfordwest Golf Club, is running Tri Golf, the mini version of the game, at Prendergast Primary School, whilst Oliver Duckett, the head professional at Trefloyne Golf Club is working with children from St Teilo’s School, St Florence School, both in Tenby, plus Sageston and Manorbier Junior Schools, with a festival to be held on 31st March.
Tom Hilling and David Ayres, assistant professionals at Tenby Golf Club, have started Tri Golf at Narberth, Stepaside, Taverspite, Templeton, St Oswalds and Tenby Junior Schools, whilst Greenhill and Pembroke School pupils, working with Tenby Golf Club head professional, Rhys Harry, are enjoying a ten-week period of tuition at Celtic Haven Resort, Lydstep – wow!
Great range of sport now offered
Others who do a smashing job in particular sports are Kenny Davies (Rugby), Debbie Wise (Football), Alice Watts (Netball), Mandy Johns (PE and School Sports Co-ordinator) and Joanne Williams (Dragon Sports Co-ordinator).
Another great innovation was the introduction of the ‘5/60 Scheme’ introduced into all secondary schools with the aim of encouraging all youngsters to enjoy 60 minutes of exercise five times each week, with a huge array of sporting activities being introduced to schools. These include the following as a superb range of things to do that should ultimately cater for every taste:
| Badminton | Dodge Ball | Basketball | Volleyball |
| Dance | Tennis | Boxersize | Fitball |
| Golf | Coasteering | Kayaking | Kung Fu |
| Rock Climbing | Street Dance | Surfing | Table Tennis |
| Weightlifting | Mountain Biking | Cheerleading | Aerobics |
| Fencing | Boccia | Golf | Wheelchair Basketball |
Anything else suggested receives due consideration and the aim is to provide a full range of activities so that PE and Games lessons are no longer to be dreaded, with grumpy old teachers dealing with just rugby, football, cricket, netball, and hockey, but with enjoyment and fulfilment as the key factors – and with young tutors attached to the schools who are often still participating at a high level themselves.
Well done indeed!
Dan Field is the 5/60 tutor at Taskers and is also PE and School Partnerships Leader, with the other 5/60 officers being Dan Bellis (Ysgol Bro Gwaun), Matthew Freeman (STP School and Cricket Development), Amanda John (St Davids), Wyndham Williams (Pembroke & Greenhill), plus Barry John (Milford Haven).
To all of these dedicated workers on behalf of sport in our county we at PembrokeshireSport.co.uk say “Keep up the good work the Pembrokeshire Sport Development team!”
