Rugby Preview

20th February 2010

Swalec Cup Round Three:

Narberth v Bedwas
The Otters bid to reach the quarter final stages for the first time as they play host to Bedwas from the Premier Division, who are old rivals but are now ensconced in 12th place, in the top section, with four wins and 11 defeats. Verdict: The Otters beat Pontypool in the last round, who are two places below Bedwas, but this will be a far greater test and although I hope Narberth progress I have to go for Bedwas on this occasion!

Division One (West):

Bridgend Athletic v Whitland
Whitland travel to play Bridgend Athletic hoping to get their promotion hopes back on track against a side that is currently sixth, with six wins, a draw and six defeats in their league programme. Verdict: This is another hard match for the Borderers and they will do really well to come away with a win against a side which is traditionally strong at home.

Division Three (West):

Cardigan v Haverfordwest
Matches between these old rivals are traditionally tough but with some good rugby usually on the menu. The Teifisiders will be looking to improve their seventh place against a Blues’ outfit desperate to climb out of the relegation zone. Verdict: The Cardis to complete the double, since they have already won in Harfat by 15-11.

Lampeter Town v Crymych
The Borderers won 30-17 at Parc Lloyd Thomas and will be eager to complete the double to maintain their top-four place in the table. Verdict: It will be even more of a battle than at home but I think the Preseli Men should win here.

Division Four (West):

Milford Haven v Betws
Milford will be desperate for points after defeat against Tenby and they should pick up a bonus point verdict over a Betws side in tenth place. Verdict: The Mariners won 35-10 in Betws and are well capable of improving on that score.

Tenby United v Cefneithin
Cefneithin won 39-10 when they played Tenby United at home but they will find the Seasiders a different side now, brimming with confidence after their most recent win at Milford Haven. Verdict: The Seasiders to beat fourth-placed Cefneithin!

Division Five (West):

Aberaeron v Llangwm
Llangwm have struggle of late but hopefully should be able to field a more representative side at Pill Parks. Verdict: The Wasps will push hard but I think Aberaeron will still be a little too strong for them!

Fishguard v Penygroes
Fishguard won by 15-10 in Penygroes, who are fourth in the table with seven wins from 11 starts, and will be eager to press their promotion claims here. Verdict: The Seagulls should win here and hopefully look for a bonus point into the bargain!

Neyland v St Davids
St Davids have played very well of late but Neyland are now deservedly top of the table and eager to stay there after a string of very impressive displays under the leadership of Mathew Williams and with Adam Collins scoring a heap of tries.  Verdict: The All Blacks won 65-10 earlier in the campaign at St Davids and should complete the double – but not by that sort of margin.
