Whitland face Narberth in derby clashRugby Preview

30th January 2010

Wasn’t it nice to see a full programme take place last weekend after all that awful weather? Considering the fact that the form book could be torn up after so much chaos over the previous month, I was pleased that I managed to get 9 out of 12 right, despite going down with my banker bet, Whitland.

So here’s this week set of forecasts – there are some tricky ones to predict so why not try to do your own predictions and let us know how you get on!

Division One (West):

Whitland v Narberth
The local derby that both sides are desperate to win because the Borderers are eager to keep top spot in the table and the Otters are beginning to climb the ladder and are now in seventh place. Verdict: The Borderers won 26-10 at the Lewis Lloyd Ground so will be hot favourites to complete the double.

Division Three (West):

Crymych v Newcastle Emlyn
Crymych beat the section leaders by 6-3 at Ddol Wiber to deny Newcastle Emlyn a 100% record so Emlyn will be eager to gain revenge here. Verdict: It could be close but I think the Preseli Men might just complete the double here.

Haverfordwest v Morriston
Haverfordwest are beginning to welcome injured players back but they face another tough home tussle against Morriston, who beat the Blues by 33-7 at home. Verdict: I would love the Blues to win and I hope they prove me wrong but I think sixth-placed Morriston might have too much fire-power.

Llanybydder v Cardigan
Llanybydder are holding up the table, with only one win alongside 11 defeats, and so Cardigan will be eager to halt their recent slide and hopefully repeat their 35-6 home win over their opponents. Verdict: The Teifisiders will win this one – no doubt about it!

Division Four (West):

Amman United v Milford Haven
The Mariners were dumped out of the Swalec Plate last weekend so will be eager to bounce back against Amman United, who are in seventh place but have only lost three games. Verdict: The Mariners won 42-22 at home and will know that only a win will keep them on Tumble’s tail at the top of the table.

Cefneithin v Pembroke
Pembroke face a hard battle at Cefneithin since they are not the best travellers and the opposition are third, with eight wins from ten games played in the league. Verdict: The Scarlets won at home by 28-23 but I think this could be a ninth success for Cefneithin.

Hendy v Tenby United
Tenby won by 31-23 at home so seek a double over Hendy knowing that their recent form has earned them a sharp climb up the table. Verdict: Hendy have won four times and lost seven matches so I believe the Seasiders can complete the double here if they play to their potential!

Pembroke Dock Quins v Burry Port
The Quins are beginning to show signs of regrouping after a disappointing early run, losing by only seven points to the league leaders last Saturday and facing a Burry Port that is only just above them in the table in tenth place. Verdict: Burry Port won the corresponding fixture at home by 21-10 but the Quins should gain ample revenge here.

Division Five (West):

Llangwm v Bynea
Llangwm are still struggling from injuries but will target this match as one they should win since Bynea are one place above them with only three wins, including a 14-8 success against the Wasps at home. Verdict: If the Wasps are at anything like full strength they will win this one at Pill Parks.

Pontyates v Neyland
Pontyates are struggling near the foot of the table with just one win alongside eight defeats so Neyland travel there with a real chance of doing well since they are in a rich vein of form. Verdict: The All Blacks to win here, with a bonus point for scoring at least four tries!

St Clears v Fishguard
This is one of the toughest tests that Fishguard will face because St Clears are fourth and only lost 14-5 at The Moors. Verdict: The Seagulls know how important this match is and should be able to complete the double – but it is sure to be tough!

St Davids v Aberaeron
The Saints have now won six games in a row and so entertain third-placed Aberaeron with real optimism but know how hard it is likely to be against the Mid Wales side. Verdict: Aberaeron won 53-10 at home and although they will face a far tougher battle here I think, sadly, that they will end the Saints wonderful winning streak.
