Morgan boys see Fishguard through

Nigel Morgan - 60 for Fishguard skipperJohnston (171 all out)
lost to
Fishguard (210 for 8)

Umpires: Steve Blowes & Tony Scourfield

Scorers: Delyth & Emma Summons (both Johnston)

Fishguard gained maximum points from their match at Johnston and it was skipper Nigel Morgan and his son Matthew who played significant roles as dad top scored with 60 runs and son reached 46 and claimed a wicket.

Nigel Morgan had eight fours in his innings and Matthew Morgan stroked six fours as they shared a third wicket stand of 57, with other contributions from Ben Watson (36 not out at just the right time), Dave Haynes (19), Jonathan Strawbridge and Darren John (15 apiece). On the bowling front, Johnston pace men Lee Summons and Simon Williams returned identical figures of 3 for 46.

Steve Mills Jnr was again the mainstay of the Johnston reply and opener Steve Price chipped in with a typically gritty 27 but a 3 for 5 cameo from Strawbridge proved decisive alongside good bowling from Rhys Dalling (2 for 32), Matthew Morgan (1 for 28) and Rob Couzens (1 for 26) so that Johnston were still 40 runs short of their target at the end.

Hayman heads way with cracking century

Richard Hayman - 117 for veteran Burton openerBurton (250 for 4)
drew with
Haverfordwest 2nds (198 for 4)

Umpires: John Williams & Glyn Pawlett

Scorers: Mark Venables & Ros Phillips

Richard Hayman and James Scale showed that experience certainly can be an advantage as both 40-somethings opened the batting for Burton at shared an opening stand of 216 in a mammoth score against Haverfordwest seconds, for whom Dan Field went close to a century but got out in a late chase for runs.

Hayman had 15 fours and two sixes in his cracking innings of 117 whilst fellow-farmer James Scale rapped ten boundaries in his supporting 85 to force the town bowlers and fielders to suffer in the heat at Oatfield Park. Morgan Scale chipped in with 27 not out as Simon Williams returned creditable figures of 3 for 44 and Jasper Holmes claimed 1 for 43.

Dan Field provided the backbone of the Town 2nds’ response with 13 fours and a six in his classy knock and Holmes contributed 29 alongside Mark Cross’s 28. Johnnie Scale completed a good day for the Burton ‘Tractor Boys’ with 4 for 23 but although there was also a wicket each for Steve Jones and Tom Baker a draw always looked likely on a good batting track as Haverfordwest ended up with a creditable 219 for 6.

Pembroke power to local derby win

Gwyn Griffiths - 5 for 30 haulStackpole (144 all out)
lost to
Pembroke (145 for 6)

Umpires: Les Hastings & Arthur Brady

Pembroke made the short journey to Stackpole and returned with a four wicket win as reward for their efforts in which Gwyn Griffiths and Dan Williams led the way.

Old-timer Griffiths spear-headed the Pembroke bowling with a 5 for 30 haul and Williams joined Spencer Harries in seeing them home to win with 44 not out.

Alan Webster (52) and Aran Nicholas (18) led the Stackpole batting to 144 all out as Perry Phillips (2 for 37), Spencer Harries (1 for 23) and Charlie Allen (1 for 10) supported Griffiths in keeping a tight rein on the runs.

Chris Gibbs bowled well for Stackpole with 3 for 26 whilst Webster (1 for 24) and Andrew Hay (1 for 48) plugged away with some success as only Paul White (22) looked settled amongst the other Pembroke batters. But Williams had six fours sprinkled through his undefeated knock and Harries showed what an asset he can be on his return from the golfing scent to rattle up 31 not out and share an unbroken stand of 58 with Williams which ultimately proved decisive.

Scott scores another ton

Scott Arthur cracked a tonCresselly 2nds (244 for 4)
beat
Saundersfoot (137 all out)

Umpires: Huw Davies & Richard Merriman

Scorers: Des Brace & Richard Merriman

Scott Arthur scored his second century in successive weekends to help Cresselly 2nds to a big win over Saundersfoot as the homesters rattled up a huge score and then winkled out the Seasiders’ batting line-up to claim maximum points.

Arthur joined Andrew Harris in a highly productive opening stand of 125 after being asked to bat first, with Harris as the main run-getter before he was out for 76 that was liberally packed with 13 fours and a six. Then Arthur took over the key role alongside Rhydian Rees (27) so that although Yannick Parker bowled well for his two wickets it was Arthur who moved sweetly to 117, including 16 fours and two sixes, before he was caught in the final over by Danny Caine off Parker.

Steve Cook (45) and Sam Butler (22) led Saundersfoot’s reply but found it hard going against the nagging accuracy of Richard Arthur (2 for 37) and Matthew Lewis (2 for 33) before Ewan Izzard applied the coup de grace with 2 for 1 at the finish, which left Cresselly victors by 107 runs.

Herbie bounce back with big points

Jonty Bennett - top scored for HerbieHerbrandston (242 for 5)
drew with
Carew 2nds (166 for 6)

Umpires: Walter Dash & Tony Waldeis

Herbrandston were able to field a strong team again for their home match against Carew 2nds and stayed in the promotion race as they gained the better of the draw against strong opposition.

Nathan Banner (eight fours in his 59) gave Herbie a good start which was maintained by Jonty Bennett (seven fours in a sparkling 82) and Kristan Bennett, the Herbie captain smashing seven fours and a six in his undefeated 60. There was a wicket apiece for Matthew Phillips, Darren Thomas, Martin Gregory, Tom Davies and trundler Barry Evans as Herbie closed their innings in a huge 242 for five wickets.

Carew’s reply was built around Adrian Harries and the opener applied himself well to reach 72 (seven fours) before he was out, with Tom Davies (38) and Aled Griffiths (22) supplying the major back-up against Kristan Bennett (3 for 34). There were wickets as well for Paul Hood, Nathan Banner and Dean John but Carew kept their consistency and were still in there at the end, although they couldn’t stop Herbie being boosted by maximum draw points.

25th May fixtures . .

Sam Butler 44 runs for Saundersfoot Seasiders swamp Johnston

Saundersfoot (153 for 2)
beat
Johnston (148 all out)

Umpires: Barry Wood & Hilliard Davies

Scorers: Hazel Poole& Delyth Summons

Saundersfoot showed what a good side they potentially are with a crushing win over an in-form Johnston outfit that must have felt it was in with a chance at tea time – only to lose by eight wickets in 32 overs.

But Johnston could at least take consolation from the fact that they showed true grit in recovering to 148 all out from a difficult position at 66 for 7 thanks to steady batting by late order men Gary James (37), Mike Davies (23) and Johnny Lewis (20 not out).

Yannick Parker continued to lead the Seasiders’ bowling attack with 3 for 36 alongside Danny Caine (2 for 36), plus old-timers Dickie Parcell (3 for 23) and Kevin Sykes (2 for 43).

Paul Mansbridge (21) and 14 year old Sam Butler (44) gave Saundersfoot a start of 46 for the first wicket as Gary James was the best Johnston bowler with 1 for 28 and Simon Williams was the only other wicket taker in a 1 for 72 spell. From there it was Steve Cook (five fours in his 36) and Dan Trowers (six fours and two sixes in 40 runs scored) who batted through to the end to ensure a convincing win and maximum bonus points, with a Trowers’ six to finish in style for the Seasiders!

Villagers vanquish poor Pembroke

Pembroke (77 all out) lost to Carew 2nds (27)

Umpires: Dave Loosmore & Dai Morris

“We were poor today” was the considered verdict of Pembroke skipper Nigel Phillips as his team slumped to a nine wicket defeat against Carew 2nds at Treleet.

Pembroke could only muster 77 runs as Chris Thomas (16) and Simon Smith-Wrench (15) managed double figures but the rest struggled against accurate bowling by Matthew Phillips (3 for 24), Tom Davies (4 for 18), Daniel Hicks (2 for 8) and Martin Gregory (1 for 21).

Carew were never likely to throw away such an advantage and made a good start via Tom Davies (21) and Ben Evans (38 not out), who was joined by James Hinchcliffe (13 not out) ion a stroll to the winning post for Carew’s second string.

Raymond ‘ton’ sets up Town triumph

Haverfordwest 2nds (239 for 3) beat Stackpole (191 all out)

Umpires: Alan Hansen & Rob Bellerby

Scorers: Ros Phillips and Claire Cox

An excellent ‘ton’ by Adam Raymond was the undoubted highlight of Haverfordwest 2nds win over Stackpole at a run-drenched Racecourse pitch as Danny Field (Haverfordwest) and John Williams (Stackpole) also showed real prowess with the bat.

‘Rayo’ slammed no fewer than 16 fours and two big sixes in his powerful knock of 106 and found a willing ally in Field, whose classy 78 included ten boundaries and two sixes, with James Butler chipping in a late 14 not out as The Town finished on a massive 239 for 3 and the only successful Stackpole bowlers were Alan Webster (2 for 36) and Adam Wilkes (1 for 5).

It is to Stackpole’s credit that they decided to chase down such a huge target and John Williams led the way with a belligerent 79 that contained eight fours and a six, with Webster chipping in with 25 but The Town reserves kept plugging away through Simon Williams (3 for 38), James Butler (2 for 29), Chris Phillips (2 for 65) and Nigel Delaney (3 for 53). The final Stackpole wicket fell from the last over of an entertaining match and Haverfordwest 2nds gained maximum points as they eased through by 48 runs.

Fishguard pace man Anthony Couzens bowls to Nathan Makeshift Herbie pay the price

Fishguard (113 for 4)
beat
Herbrandston (112 all out)

Umpires: Peter Perry & Phil Marsden

Section leaders Herbrandston travelled to Fishguard with a makeshift side and paid an inevitable price as they went down by six wickets to Nigel Morgan’s team – but still remain pole position, albeit by a reduced margin.

Nathan Banner (20) and Herbie captain Kristan Bennett (30) were the only batsmen to look comfortable against the pace attack of Rob Couzens (5 for 44) and brother Anthony (1 for 23), supported by Ben Watson (1 for 27) before Rhys Dalling shifted the Herbie tail with a 3 for 2 cameo.

Jonathan Strawbridge launched the Fishguard counter with a typically strong 47 that included eight fours and a six against a good spell of bowling by teenager Rhys Williams (3 for 14), but David Haynes (29) and Matthew Morgan (17) helped see Fishguard home with four wickets still in hand.

Super Scott makes big century

Cresselly 2nds (254 for 2) drew with Burton (141 for 5)

Umpires: Dave Brandon & Tony Waldeis

Scorers: Des Brace & Mark Venables

A superb undefeated 129 by Scott Arthur was the undoubted highlight of a runs-filled tussle between Cresselly 2nds and Burton where Cresselly launched a huge score of 254 for 2 and Burton battled their way to 141 for 5 in response.

It gave Burton the draw but no extra points and so they had to settle for only five points as the homesters pocketed 22 points.

Arthur stroked 14 fours and three sixes as he carried his bat throughout the Cresselly innings where he had great support from Nick Davies (five fours and three sixes in his 51) and Andrew Harris (six fours in 45 runs), sharing in respective stands of 121 and 112 with his two colleagues. Luke Hayman (1 for 43) and Morgan Scale (1 for 83) were the Burton wicket-takers and both young bowlers acquitted themselves well in hard circumstances.

Burton captain Mike Venables secured his second successive half century as he top scored with 65 not out, assisted by James Scale (24) and Chris Campbell (15) but Cresselly had a wicket apiece from Rhydian Rees, Steve Thomas, Matthew Lewis and Richard Arthur as they kept Burton in bottom spot in the table, despite the draw.

23rd May 2009 fixtures . .

Yannick Parker took 5-15 Seasiders slam Pembroke

Pembroke (51 all out)
lost to
Saundersfoot (52 for 1)

Umpires: Les Hastings & John Williams

Pembroke found themselves caught on a damp wicket at Treleet and up against Saundersfoot bowlers able to take full advantage as the Seasiders shot out the home club for only 52 runs and strolled home for the loss of one wicket.

Only Dan Scourfield (17) and veteran skipper Nigel Phillips (15) managed double figures for Pembroke against Yannick Parker, who bowled really well in his 5 for 15 spell, Dan Trowers (3 for 11) and Kevin Sykes (2 for 5).

Then Danny Caine maintained his good form with the bat as he struck a speedy 26 not out and only Rob Weston (1 for 2) enjoyed any bowling success for Pembroke on a day to forget for them.

Burton's Ross Edwards bowled Field day for Summons family

Burton (148 all out)
lost to
Johnston (154 for 3)

Umpire: Richard Merriman

Scorers: Mark Venables and Delyth Summons

It proved to be a real field day for the Summons’ clan as father John, son Lee and daughter Emma all turned out for Johnston in their seven wicket win at Burton, with mum Delyth completing a committed quartet as she did the scoring!

Lee played a key role as he claimed 5 for 30 in helping restrict Burton to 148 all out and then finished the game with 29 not out alongside dad, who carried his bat for 67 not out, and even managed a big six to take Johnston to maximum points.

Burton’s final tally owed much to skipper Mike Venables’ 60 in 68 deliveries (nine fours) alongside Martin James (34) and Richard Hayman (29) as Gary James (3 for 35) and Steve Mills Jnr (2 for 12) also supported with the ball.

Talented teenager Mills showed what an asset he is going to be over the years as he stroked 30 runs in setting Johnston on the way to victory, with John and Lee Summons finishing things off in style to earn Johnston a good away win.

Anthony Couzens took 6 wickets Stackpole slump as Couzens strikes

Stackpole (46 all out)
lost to
Fishguard (134 for 9)

Umpires: Dennis Chiffi & Tony Scourfield

An inspired spell of pace bowling by Anthony Couzens helped Fishguard gain a convincing 88-run win over Stackpole, whose topsy-turvy start to the season continued as they were shot out for a paltry 46 runs, of which Huw Cox contributed 33 of them!

Skipper Nigel Morgan led the Fishguard batting by example with an accomplished 52 as Alan Webster was the pick of the home bowling with a 4 for 24 haul.

But after tea Couzens caused mayhem with his ability to gain bounce and only Cox made a contribution as Fishguard pouched a welcome six-wicket haul which allowed his side to leap-frog over their opponents and Pembroke near the foot of the section table.

Nathan Nanner 40 runs Herbie maintain winning streak

Herbrandston (150 for 9)
beat
Cresselly 2nds (53 all out)

Umpires: Glyn Pawlett & Arthur Brady

Herbrandston’s splendid start to the season continued as they picked up maximum points against Cresselly 2nds as youngsters Nathan Banner and Dean John were the major contributors.

Banner (40) and Leigh Marchant (33) were the main contributors to Herbie’s health 150 for 9, with Cresselly skipper Dick Arthur claiming 3 for 26 from his accurate medium pacers. Andrew Harris marked his return to action with the bat for Cresselly as he top scored with 18 but Banner (3 for 2) and John (3 for 12) shot Cresselly out for only 53 runs to give Herbie top spot as they leap-frogged over their opponents as reward for this performance.

Darren Thomas played a key rolsCarew win by one wicket

Carew 2nds (112 for 9)
beat
Haverfordwest 2nds (111 all out)

Umpires: John Austin & Hilliard Davies

Scorer: Ros Phillips (Haverfordwest)

There was high drama at Carew before the club’s second string beat their counterparts from Haverfordwest by a single wicket as Darren Thomas played a key role with bat and ball.

Thomas grabbed 4 for 31 alongside Martin Gregory (2 for 42) and Aled Davies (2 for 12) as Haverfordwest reached 111 all out thanks to Jasper Holmes (28), Richard Scriven (23), Simon Williams (16) and an undefeated 30 by John Tooze.

A Haverfordwest win seemed very much on the cards as Simon Williams again showed what a good prospect he is with a 4 for 12 spell of seven overs and found support from Chris Phillips (2 for 25), Nigel Delaney and James Butler, with a wicket apiece.

But Carew had Thomas involved as they lurched to 55 for 8 but reached their target thanks to his 33 runs in a vital stand of 53 with Steve Ive (17 not out), so that although Thomas departed with the winning post in sight he had done his job well.

Danny Caine - big innings and wickets for Saunders Carew get the Caine from Danny

Saundersfoot (108 for 2)
beat
Carew 2nds (107 all out)

Umpires:
Phillip Marsden &
Peter Perry

Another superb all-round display by Danny Caine helped Saundersfoot gain a comprehensive victory over Carew Seconds as he grabbed 4 for 26 and then smashed 72 in only 49 deliveries to steer the Seasiders home by eight wickets.

Martin Scourfield (35) and Ben Evans (25) led the Carew batting before a late 10 not out by Neil Gregory helped the Villagers to 107 as Cain found support from Yannick Parker (3 for 25), Kevin Sykes (2 for 30) and   Dickie Parsell (1 for 18) in keeping runs at a premium.

Caine then sped to his 50 from 44 deliveries and as if deciding this wasn’t quick enough smashed the next four deliveries for three sixes and a four before he went for one big hit too many and was well caught by Aled Griffiths off the bowling of Gregory.

He had nine fours and four sixes in his powerful innings and Paul Mansbridge provided the ideal foil with his patient 23 not out so that Saundersfoot steamed to victory in only 17 overs and atoned for their weak display the previous week.

Dan Williams - played well in defeat for Pembroke Cresselly 2nds cruise home

Cresselly 2nds (165 for 9)
beat
Pembroke (86 all out)

Umpires:
Steve Blowes &
Walter Dash

Cresselly 2nds maintained their impressive start to the new campaign as they easily accounted for a Pembroke first string which was always on the back foot once Cresselly got going. Scott Arthur led the home batting with 49 runs, ably assisted by Simon Allen-Clarke (24), Sam Harts (20) and Huw Neil (making his seasonal debut with 17 not out.)

Dan Williams (4 for 34), Spencer Harries (2 for 31) and skipper Nigel Phillips (2 for16) were the pick of the Pembroke bowlers but a final target of 166 for victory was always going to be a big challenge.

Just how big soon became evident as Sam Harts claimed 4 for 14 and Huw Neil 2 for 17 as only Paul White (15) and Williams (14) managed double figures. Sean Jenkins chipped in with 4 for 44 and Pembroke were shot out for only 86 runs to give Cresselly 2nds a deserved haul of maximum points for their efforts.

** All other matches abandoned without a ball being bowled **

9th May 2009 fixtures . .

Sean Powell - 82 runs and 5 for 14 as Pembroke's s Super Sean saves Pembroke

Pembroke (177 for 9)
beat
Fishguard (78 all out)

A superb all-round performance by Sean Powell helped Pembroke gain a big win over Fishguard at Treleet in a match where fortunes ebbed and swayed dramatically.

Powell strode to the wicket with Pembroke really struggling on 58 for 7 and blasted a boundary-laden 82, which was supported by old-timers Gwyn Griffiths (17) and Nigel Phillips (15) so that Pembroke reached a very healthy 177 for 9 wickets in their 45 overs.

Rob Couzens (4 for 35) and Ben Watson (3 for 40) had bowled well for Fishguard but, along with skipper Nigel Morgan, took something of a caning once Powell peppered to boundary.

In stark contrast, Fishguard had a good start through Dave Haynes (24) and Rhys Dalling (19) as they reached 50 for 1 in eight overs but then collapsed dramatically as Powell grabbed 5 for 14 and Gwyn Griffiths again supported with 2 for 17. Fishguard plummeted to 87 all out to give Pembroke maximum points – which looked decidedly unlikely until Powell got involved!

Umpires: Trefor Evans & Tony Waldeis

Mikey makes Seasiders suffer

Haverfordwest 2nds (203 for 7) beat Saundersfoot (87 all out)

Mikey Jones - excellent 76 not out in first matchMikey Jones swapped his rugby boots as a talented young fly half at Haverfordwest for his cricket kit in the town and played an influential role as The Town seconds easily accounted for Saundersfoot.

He was ably assisted by another fine young prospect in Simon Williams, who raced in to claim 4 for 5 in his initial spell to reduce the Saundersfoot innings to the rubble of 10 for 5.

Jones had seven fours in his unbeaten 78 after his team had lost four early wickets and found useful allies in Adam Raymond (33) and Josh Wilment (28) against the bowling of Danny Caine (2 for 32), Yannick Parker (2 for56), Kevin Sykes (2 for 27) and Dickie Parsell (1 for 45) so that a final score of 203 for 7 showed a real recovery.

Then Williams caused the early Saundersfoot batsmen all sorts of trouble with his left arm seamers and Nigel Delaney picked up a creditable 4 for 12 so that only Danny Caine, with ten fours and a six in his speedy 60 ever looked settled. There was a wicket each for Wilment and Jasper Holmes as no other Saundersfoot batsman stayed long and the Town eased home with maximum points.

Umpires: Richard Merriman & Dennis Chiffi

Scorers: Ros Phillips & Hazel Poole

Huw Cox - Unbeaten 56 in Stackpole's big win Stackpole score runs galore

Stackpole (173 for 2)
beat
Cresselly 2nds (171 for 5)

There were runs galore at Stackpole as visitors Cresselly 2nds reached a healthy 171 for 5 and Stackpole passed it for the loss of only two wickets as Huw Cox and Josh Davies reached half centuries.

Rhydian Rees scored a typically robust 66 (nine fours) for Cresselly and found Steve Thomas as a useful supporter as the left-hander scored 36 not out, with Darrell Willington the pick of the Stackpole bowlers with 2 for 30.

But what might have seemed a big score at tea soon evaporated as Cox (59 not out) and Davies (53) rattled up the runs before pocket-battleship batsman Andrew Hay finished the game alongside Cox with a stylish 34 not out to give Stackpole a very good win by nine wickets.

Umpires: John Williams & Alan Hansen

Jonty Bennett - 44 runs for Herbrandston Herbie bomb out Burton

Herbrandston (83 for 3)
beat
Burton (81 all out)

Herbrandston’s excellent start to the new season continued as they entertained Burton and bombed them out for only 81 runs before Jonty Bennett and Leigh Marchant scored the necessary runs to put Herbie well clear at the top of the table.

Again it was Herbie’s pace bowlers that caused the damage as Paul Hood (2 for 18) and Kristan Bennett (2 for 14) steamed in to share four early wickets and then teenagers Dean John (3 for 24) and Nathan Banner (3 for 15) completed the demolition of the Burton innings so that only James Scale and Johnny Griffiths could muster double figures.

A target of 84 runs for victory was soon achieved as Jonty Bennett rapped 44 runs from only 36 deliveries (eight fours) and Marchant was 18 not out at the end as Mark Griffiths, Tom Baker and Johnnie Griffiths picked up a wicket apiece for Burton.

Umpires: Dave Loosmore & Arthur Chapman

John Summons - 64 not out for Johnston veteran bat Summons steers Johnston home

Carew 2nds (115 all out)
lost to
Johnston (117 for 1)

A typically powerful 64 not out by Johnston opening bat John Summons helped his side gain a nine-wicket win at Carew against the host club’s second string as Steve Mills (Jnr) provided the vital back-up with useful runs and wickets.

Carew were limited to 115 all out as Lee Summons marked his return to the club with 3 for 21 alongside Mills (3 for 18), Steve Jenkins (1 for 9), Chris Fitzpatrick (1 for 27) and Gary James (1 for 19) so the home batsmen were shot out for 115.

Johnston reached 33 without loss before veteran Carew bowler Aled Davies shifted Steve Price for 13 but Summons had four fours and two sixes in his 64 not out made from 77 balls and Mills was even quicker as he struck his undefeated 32 from only 20 deliveries so that Johnston were able to celebrate victory in only 27 overs.

Umpires: Hilliard Davies & Huw Davies

Scorers: Delyth Summons
