Sahana Sekaran is a 6th Form pupil at Sir Thomas Picton School and she was part of the very successful dance team that finished 8th in the Welsh Street Dance Finals of 2009.
Perfect attributes
Sahana attended every dance session and played a major role in choreographing her team’s routine. It was here that the school 5x60 Officer noticed she had the attributes to be a perfect leader/assistant for the dance programme at the school.
Lunch time clubs
Sahana has now started running her own lunch time club for years 7 to 9 girls whilst also assisting with the 5x60 dance club on Wednesdays & Fridays, after school. Sahana is an extremely hard working student who has the patience, leadership skills, communication skills and also the motivational skills to assist others in these clubs.
Excellent role model
She is an excellent role model for all the young pupils at the school and she is extremely highly regarded by all the teachers at the school as the numbers are growing weekly and dance has become an integral part of the school’s sporting activities as a result of her major involvement and enthusiasm.
Dean Flood – Teacher and Sport Organiser
Finalist, Contribution to School Sport Category
Dean Flood contributes a huge amount to school sport in Pembrokeshire and his contributions are extensive and long standing.
At county level, Dean extends the football match-playing opportunities for boys and girls from Primary Schools throughout Pembrokeshire via organising and coordinating fixtures and rules for the Pembs Primary Schools Mixed Football Festival (in Spring 2009 there were 33 schools which took part – over 300 pupils).
He was also heavily involved in the Pembrokeshire Primary Schools’ Girls Football Festival and the Pembrokeshire Primary Schools Knock Out Competition, plus the Pembrokeshire Schools’ Plate Competition, where the emphasis of all games played is on fun and fair play. Where possible, Dean is involved in the practical arrangements of these events on the day as he provides, puts up and dismantles sets of goal posts – essential for these events to take place.
At school level, Dean is the PE co-ordinator at Haverfordwest VC School where he encourages every child to take a positive approach to participating in physical activity. He supports the school staff in planning, delivery and evaluation of physical activity during curriculum time and after school. He has introduced Dragon Sport to the school with energy and enthusiasm, and encourages volunteers (students / parents) in the community to assist with these extra-curricular sports clubs. He also promotes school club links to children at the school. To this end he is a great role model as player manager of Prendergast Villa FC and a playing member of Haverfordwest Cricket Club.
Brenda Scourfield – Part Time Teacher and Sport Organiser
Finalist, Contribution to School Sport Category
Brenda Scourfield is a part time teacher at Templeton Primary School, where she takes responsibility to deliver all the schools extra-curricular PE and enthuses children with her positive approach.
She is one of the main organisers of the Pembrokeshire Primary Schools’ Swimming Gala, and Brenda has coached her school’s hockey team which has reached the Welsh Primary Schools Activiate Finals for the past five years. This year they finished in a very commendable fifth place, thanks to Brenda’s efforts in coaching some eager youngsters. Although Brenda is employed part-time at the school, most of her commitment to her school’s PE is during her own time and she fully deserves recognition for all that she has done over a long time.
