Rugby Previews

19th December 2009

Division One (West):

Bridgend Athletic v Whitland
Whitland will travel to Bridgend Athletic in search of the double since they beat the Athletic by 31-10 on the opening day of the season. The Borderers will look to reproduce their recent good form and maintain top spot in the table. Verdict: The Borderers to win what could be a tough tussle.

Narberth v Bridgend
Narberth caused real excitement in the county on the opening day when the travelled to the Brewery Field and beat their former top-class opponents by 19-18, but since then Bridgend have strengthened their squad and the Otters have failed to find their form of last season as they have won only two other games from eight starts. Verdict: I hope the Otters can raise the tempo because they need to start winning here!

Division Three (West):

Cardigan v Newcastle Emlyn
Cardigan goes into this local derby in search of a morale-boosting win against top of the table clash against Newcastle Emlyn, who have only lost once, against Crymych. Verdict: I think Emlyn might shade the result but I won’t be the least bit surprised if the Teifisiders prove me wrong with home advantage!

Haverfordwest v Crymych
Another local derby as Haverfordwest entertain Crymych, who are fourth in the section with six wins from eight matches and with a Swalec win last week to get them up and running again. Verdict: The Blues lost narrowly against Laugharne and I think the visitors will inflict another defeat on Haverfordwest in a hard-fought game.

Division Four (West):

Cefneithin v Pembroke Dock Quins
The Quins are not the best travellers but are in confident mood after winning against Hendy so hopefully they will play well at third-placed Cefneithin, who have so far lost only twice. Verdict: Cefneithin are the form team so I have to pick them against the Quins.

Pembroke v Tumble
Tumble will arrive at Crickmarren in second place and eager to keep the pressure on leaders Milford Haven – but they will find Pembroke in no mood to lose another home match. Verdict: If the Scarlets’ pack plays well they might cause a shock but Tumble are firm favourites for an eighth win out of nine matches so far.

Pontarddulais v Milford Haven
This could be one of the toughest matches of the day as Milford Haven travel to Pontarddulais eager to maintain their proud first place in the section but knowing that the Bont are traditionally strong at home and looking to move up from fourth place. Verdict: This could be a real banana skin for the Mariners and I hope they prove me wrong because I think the Bont might be a little too street-wise for them.

Tenby United v Burry Port
Tenby United have been boosted by the return of key players from Narberth and with their Fijian contingent also playing well they are beginning to move up the table. Burry Port are just below the Seasiders in seventh place but won’t fancy a trip to Heywood Lane. Verdict: The Seasiders to win with something to spare.

Division Five (West):

Llangwm v Swansea Uplands
Swansea Uplands are the current whipping-boys of Division Five (West) and Llangwm will have been boosted by their excellent home win over Furnace on their last appearance. Verdict: The Wasps to really buzz in this encounter!

Neyland v Fishguard
Undoubtedly the match of the day in Pembrokeshire as second-placed Neyland look to lower the colours of a Fishguard side still boasting a proud 100% record in first position. Both have been playing really well and it certainly could go either way. Verdict: The All Blacks are traditionally very strong at the Athletic Ground and with their vociferous supports cheering them on it could be a first defeat for the Seagulls!

St Davids v St Clears
This battle of the Saints sees St Clears arriving at Fishguard Road in third place with seven wins from 10 matches whilst St Davids have enjoyed a couple of wins recently to boost their morale. Verdict: I hope St Davids will win but I expect to hear that St Clears have grabbed an eighth victory.
