Rugby Preview
Fixtures for 14th November 2009
It’s back to the local rugby scene this weekend, thank goodness! I had 9 out of 12 the week before but this week’s lot look even trickier, with three local derbies.
So let’s crack on and see which teams we jinx this weekend by tipping them to win!
Division One (West):
Llangennech v Whitland
Whitland look to maintain their first place as they travel to Llangennech, who are in fifth place – now this is a tough one because the opposition have been in good nick of late. Verdict: A real tester for the Borderers but they should manage another win if they play well.Narberth v Cwmllynfell
Narberth are at home to Cwmllynfell and the Otters will have targeted this as a ‘must win’ fixture since the opposition are in the bottom two and struggling to pick up points. Verdict: Narberth will have too much fire-power for Cwm.Division Three (West):
Cardigan v Crymych
Cardigan play host to near neighbours Crymych in Division Three (West) and there is no match that either side wants to win more. The Preseli Men have moved into second spot in the table with several good wins whilst the Teifisiders are currently sixth but with the potential to go higher. Verdict: It should be a sizzler at Parc Lloyd Thomas and I have to plump for Crymych to win for the first time in a league game at Cardigan!Haverfordwest v Llanelli Wanderers
Haverfordwest entertain Llanelli Wanderers in Division Three (West) knowing that a win will see them leap-frog over the Wanderers and towards the safety of mid table. Verdict: The Blues need a good start in this one – and then they will go on to a win.Division Four (West):
Pembroke v Milford Haven
No less compelling is the match at Crickmarren, with the Mariners as firm favourites as they sit proudly atop the section after gaining promotion last campaign. Alan McClelland has compiled a talented young side with a strong spine of experience but he will know that the Scarlets at home are a strong opposition, especially if their pack is allowed even an inch to build up their momentum. Verdict: It should be a game to watch but I think the Mariners will shade it!Tenby United v Betws
Tenby United will expect to start climbing the table if they can beat Betws at Heywood Lane but they need to find a level of consistency and make Heywood Lane a place dreaded by the opposition. Verdict: Come on you Seasiders – you can win this one!Trimsaran v Pembroke Dock Quins
Pembroke Dock Quins should win at Trimsaran since their opponents have yet to win a match this season but they will also need to find a settled side and become more consistent. Verdict: This is a ‘must win’ tussle for the Quins and I expect them to pouch the precious points.Division Five (West):
Bynea v Fishguard
Fishguard boast the only 100% record in the county which they will defend at eighth-placed Bynea and expect to carry on winning well. Verdict: The Seagulls to soar again if they are at something like full strength.Neyland v St Clears
Neyland will hope to beat St Clears at the Athletic Ground in what is traditionally a hard fought encounter between tow committed sides – as both teams have 27 points to sit in third and fourth places. Verdict: The All Blacks to edge home here, with home advantage a big plus for them.St Davids v Llangwm
St Davids are home to Llangwm as both are struggling near the foot of the table, with one win each from eight games. But this local derby will be fiercely fought because neither side wants to finish with the lowest position of all Pembrokeshire clubs and captains Fraser Watson (St Davids) and Nick Phillips (Llangwm) will badly want to win this one! Verdict: It could go down to the wire but I think the Saints pack could see them home.
