Rob SummonsRobbie's high-gloss finish is made of the white stuff!

Rob Summons would say that he has been afforded a wide range of experiences during his successful time as chairman of Haverfordwest County AFC but none quite to compare with a ‘happening’ the other week which left him looking like a cross between the Abominable Snowman and a ghost.
Rob doubles up as groundsman at the Bridge Meadow and when he received a phone call from Dan Duffy, the previous incumbent who is doing so well at the Liberty Stadium, Swansea, Rob was only too pleased to look for a couple of things that Dan needed to borrow from the equipment shed.
Unfortunately, as he stretched up to look for the tools on a high shelf he dislodged a tin of emulsion paint and over it went. Now normally all that would have happened was a dent to appear in the tin but on this occasion someone had forgotten to put the lid on and over it poured, straight on to a dumbfounded Mr Summons!
I daren’t tell you what he said because it was unprintable on such a salubrious site but he wasn’t best pleased. His main suspicion fell on Lenny Lewis, the popular painter at the club, but he absolutely denied responsibility and so the mystery remains unsolved – but our Robbie is still conducting investigations now that he has finally got all the paint off – and Mr Duffy has been asked to supply his old pal at the Bridge Meadow with some Swansea City clothing to make up for Robbie’s shock drenching!

High praise for Bridge Meadow pitch

Staying at the Bridge Meadow Stadium for a moment longer it is nice to see recognition coming the club’s way because of the superb pitch and excellent facilities there. They recently had three international matches in eight days as Wales Ladies entertained Belgium in a World Cup match on a Saturday, and then there were under 17 games in the EUFA tournament where Iceland played Russia in midweek and then Wales took on Russia on the Saturday. The referee for the ladies’ match was Ann-Helen Ostervold (Norway), with her compatriots Ann Wenche Kleven and Signe Rydland as the assistant referees, and Ann-Helen told delighted Bluebirds’ officials that it was the best playing surface she had ever reffed on. High praise indeed from an internationally recognised match official so well done Rob Summons and his hardy band of assistants!

Bernie ArmstrongBernie’s bamboozled by Carne class!

Before watching Fishguard and Llangwm lock horns in rugby recently I popped across to the adjoining Phoenix Park because I was early and wanted to renew my acquaintance with some of the characters there like Bernie Armstrong and Brian Morris.
In the past I have enjoyed penalty shoot outs with Goodwick keeper Carl Woodhouse and once again offered my usual challenge for a quid, which he took up. I had my first puny effort saved but was delighted to eventually pip a very good keeper like Carl by 3-2.

It was then the ubiquitous Mr Armstrong decided that anything a 62 year old could do he was bound to improve upon and so he decided to have a bash – but Carl came up trumps by beating Bernie 3-2. This so rattled the Goodwick team manager that he offered a further challenge, that he would score three out of three penalties, for a wager of £5. Carl duly accepted and pulled off a blinding save to his right from the very first spot kick to win the bet – and I hope that Bernie coughed up his fiver after the match. Whether he did or not I don’t know and it doesn’t matter to an old codger like me because I will be able to remind him of his defeat for at least three months before he finds some other way of getting his own back!

Milford Exiles spotted in the Blue Light District

Karen Griffiths, better known for her support of Milford mini rugby in its infant years and by far the better half of Dai Griffiths, recently travelled with her pal Alison Williams (another former Milford girl based in Llantwit Major) to see ‘Oliver’, the popular West End stage show. They stayed at the Hilton Metropol and after the show enjoyed a couple of wines before going back to their room. Drawn by the bright city lights and hustle and bustle in the street below Alison called Karen to witness the comings and goings in the building opposite. Sat in the window the intrepid pair were amazed by a stream of police vehicles speeding in and out and also uniformed bobbies up and down the steps.  ‘It must be a raid’ concurred the ladies before settling down for the night. They awoke early next morning keen to see what all the commotion was about and were soon giggling at their faux pas as the name of the building opposite was Paddington Green Police Station .Luckily no one below noticed the two staring out the window in the early hours as it was four floors up and had no red light to attract punters!
