Simon and Louisa both captain Cresselly
A little piece of sporting history has been made at Cresselly Cricket Club in the 2009 season because their first team skipper and ladies’ captain are the brother and sister duo of Simon and Louisa Cole.
Both were elected prior to the start of the new campaign and have enjoyed leading from the front, with Simon taking Cresselly to a record-breaking 25th Harrison-Allen Bowl success over Neyland and completing the coveted double by edging out Carew in the league.
Simon has been the mainstay of the Cresselly batting over the years and it is generally agreed that he is amongst the top three batsmen in the league with his powerful left-handed stroke play. This season has also seen him take on more of a role with his slow bowling and he has taken quite a few wickets.
Louisa has been playing cricket for the club since she was 13 and now, 12 years on, has taken the ladies’ side into fourth place in the table. She has always had an interest in cricket after watching dad Glyn scoring runs for the Cresselly first team over the years.
She was vice captain last campaign and agreed to lead the team this season, always with the emphasis on trying their best but enjoying it as well with the large crop of youngsters that are coming through like Megan Jenkins, Rebecca Williams, Lauren and Sophie Arthur, whose father Dick captains the club’s second team.
Louisa’s vice-captain is Lois Howlett-Dyer, who doubles up as first-team scorer for the men, plus Ruth Izzard as the other experienced player in the side. The team spirit must be good because at the end-of-season barbecue, which was held at Louisa’s house in Pembroke, over 20 turned up to celebrate a very enjoyable campaign.
Both say that they have enjoyed the new responsibility and there is one thing for sure – Cresselly Cricket Club is well served as long as two such nice characters are at the helm of their respective teams!
