Rugby Preview

fixtures for 3rd October 2009

Oh dear! Oh dear! 12 matches played last Saturday and I was right with only six of them, the worst since we started PembrokeshireSport.co.uk. I have already received a call from The Expert, suggesting he does the rugby as well as football forecasts, whilst I just clean up around the place. I’m always an optimist, however, and I am confident that it will be different on Saturday. Only time will tell, though!

Division One (West):

Llangennech v Narberth
Llangennech lost at home to Whitland last week and will be eager to avoid a Pembrokeshire double defeat as they take on Narberth, who have lost their last three matches and are eager to climb the table. Verdict: This is a tough one for the Otters but they can win it if they play to their potential.

Whitland v Builth Wells
Whitland have made a cracking start to their season and will go into this tussle with Builth Wells in confident mode, especially since the visitors have lost all four matches so far, with just a solitary bonus point. Verdict: The Borderers to win this one – no doubt about it!

Division Three (West):

Cardigan v Llanybydder
Cardigan have only won once so far but then so have opponents Llanybydder so this could be a close encounter of the rugby kind. Verdict: I think the Teifisiders haven’t had the best of luck so far but should get back to winning ways here.

Morriston v Haverfordwest
Haverfordwest will be boosted by their marvelous home win against Llandeilo but they meet another tough team in Morriston, who are currently second in the table. Verdict: If the Blues are at full strength they can take on anyone in the section but I have to go with the homesters on this occasion.

Newcastle Emlyn v Crymych
Newcastle Emlyn have won their four matches to sit proudly a top the section table and Crymych are currently third with three wins from four starts. Verdict: The Preseli Men are capable of upsetting the odds but I think Emlyn could be promotion candidates and so I plump for them with home advantage.

Division Four (West):

Burry Port v Pembroke Dock Quins
The Quins showed their capabilities when pushing Milford all the way but they are not the best of travellers – although they take on opponents who are ninth in the table and not in the best of form. Verdict: I hope the Quins break their duck here but I fear their away form might just let them down a little.

Milford Haven v Amman United
Milford Haven have surprised clubs in this section with their attacking play but they take on an experienced Amman United outfit which has an identical record in terms of wins and losses so this is no cakewalk. Verdict: The Mariners are at home and this is sure to tip the odds in their favour – so I go for Mackie’s Boys to win.

Pembroke v Cefneithin
Pembroke have won both of their home games so far whilst Cefneithin have only lost to Milford from four starts so this is another tough hurdle for the Scarlets. Verdict: Cefneithin to sneak home in a hard-fought match.

Tenby United v Hendy
Tenby finally got off to a win last week and should be really geed up as they entertain Hendy, who are very strong up front but have lost two out of four fixtures so far. Verdict: The Seasiders should be victorious here – if they play to their potential.

Division Five (West):

Aberaeron v St Davids
This is sure to be a tough challenge for Fraser Watson and his Saints’ squad because Aberaeron at home are usually strong – and they have already won three matches out of four to sit nicely in the top three of the section. Verdict: A home win, sadly!

Bynea v Llangwm
This could be a chance for Llangwm to break their duck in terms of wins but they will need to travel with a full squad if they are to beat a Bynea outfit which has won two games so far, both at home. Verdict: The Wasps could sneak this match but I have to go for a Bynea win on current form.

Fishguard v St Clears
This is the top clash of the day in this division since both sides have a 100% record, with the Seagulls having two bonus points more but with St Clears having home advantage. Verdict: It could be a Titanic clash and I am going for Alan Phillips and his Fishguard team.

Neyland v Pontyates
Neyland lost their unbeaten tag at Furnace last Saturday but are now at home against Pontyates, who have a 100% loss record so far and not even a bonus point to show for their efforts. Verdict: The All Blacks to win this match – or I’ll eat my hat!
