Blues plan player reunion

Haverfordwest Rugby Club are due to play Cardigan at home on Saturday, 10th October and they are inviting all former players to attend a reunion at the clubhouse and match.
The match will be sponsored by former ‘great’ players Brian ‘Ginger’ Davies (who was a superb prop and an even better captain), John Griffiths (the liveliest of hookers who enjoyed a bit of chatter with opposing No 2s) and Keith Fleming (rightly regarded as one of the very best flankers of his era).
For further details or to confirm your attendance phone the clubhouse on 01437 762832 – they will be delighted to hear from you.

Full steam ahead for the Phoenix!

Organisers of the Phoenix Project were awarded a £500,000 presentation cheque by Big Lottery officials to members of the project’s design team, along with a representative of Pembrokeshire County Council’s Community Regeneration Unit, met with Big Lottery officials at Fishguard and Goodwick Sports Club to confirm details of the new centre’s specifications and funding.
At the meeting Niah Jones, Big Lottery Case Officer, gave the committee a presentation cheque for £500,000.
The scheme is the brainchild of Fishguard & Goodwick Sports Club and aims to provide much needed changing facilities for local sports clubs, plus meeting and function rooms for community use. The new centre will also have a community cafe and bar, open for public use.
The project has already received over 20 expressions of interest from construction companies wanting to tender for the main contract. Tom Kinver, head of the Design Team said they anticipated confirmation of the main contractor by January 2010 with demolition of the old clubhouse to take place by April.
“We expect it will take about 12 months to construct the new building which will hopefully be ready for use by sports clubs and the community by May 2011,” he said.
John Deason, Chairman of Fishguard & Goodwick Sports Club said they were continuing to raise funds locally to supplement the grants they had received from the Big Lottery, Welsh Assembly Government and Pembrokeshire County Council.
“The rugby, football, tennis and cricket clubs, as well as the Goodwick Brass Band, have all committed to make significant capital contributions. However, we still need to cover any shortfall by local fundraising. I would therefore urge your readers to support our Buy a Brick scheme and purchase £5 virtual bricks for the new build.
“Nearly 400 local residents and community groups have already contributed £8,000 and over the next 18 months, as the new centre is being built, we aim to increase this Buy a Brick total to £50,000,” he said.
“Anyone wishing to support the project can log onto the project’s new website www.phoenixcentre.info which goes online next week and which will have a ‘Paypal’ facility for direct donations. Alternatively, bricks can be bought at the old sports club-house, which is open at the weekends on Friday evenings, all day on Saturdays and Sunday lunchtimes. During the week the clubhouse is also open on Monday and Thursday evenings. Anyone wanting to find out more about our project is invited to attend a public meeting, which will be held at the sports club on Friday 16 October at 7pm.

Lauren leaves the rest trailing

Lauren Bell continues to excel in Welsh athletics and over the past two weekends has continued to shine.
First she travelled to Bedford for the UK Championships, won her 800 metre heat on Saturday and then achieved gold on the Sunday as she was first to break the tape.
Then she competed in Cardiff last weekend and smashed her personal best by two seconds for a cracking time of 2 minutes 11.11 seconds to make her the third fastest Welsh woman athlete in Wales this year.
Well done Lauren from PembrokeshireSport.co.uk – and keep up the good work.

Jordan stars with five gold medals

Jordan Hart showed just why she is so highly regarded in the world of badminton recently when she won five gold medals in the Welsh National Championships held at Llanelli and added a silver medal to have top pundits scratching their heads to think of another occasion when someone has performed so well.

Firstly, she dominated her own under 15 age category as she comfortably beat the other Welsh contenders to scoop gold medals in the singles, doubles (with Cardiff's Louise Breen) and mixed doubles with Michael Kinnear, also of Cardiff.

Then it was on to the under 17 events the next day where she won her way through to the singles final and although she lost to Sarah Thomas, who is two years her senior, she was in contention right up until the very last point and demonstrated the fact that she is fast closing the gap on her Cardiff-based opponent. Jordan joined new partner Georgia Hughes of North Wales in the doubles and they beat No 1 seeds Sarah Thomas and Aimee Moran with Jordan joining forces with Daniel Font to win the mixed doubles and complete a magnificent weekend's badminton.

It was made even better by the fact that an agent of Yonex, the number one suppliers of badminton equipment, approached Jordan to offer her a contract for kit sponsorship - a sure sign that those who are tipping Jordan to go right to the top know their stuff because she really is playing so well! Well done Jordan from your friends at pembrokeshiresport.co.uk

Take part in the Preseli Bluestone Challenge

Haverfordwest, Cardigan, Fishguard & Goodwick Rotary Clubs, in conjunction with Ingli Runners, have combined to stage a brand new outdoor event on Sunday, 19 th July called   the ‘Preseli Bluestone Challenge’. The challenge will involve two different disciplines starting at Crug-yr-Hwch near Crymych and for those people interested in a brisk stroll in some of the most spectacular scenery in West Wales there will be a fun run and walk, while for the more serious outdoor athletes there is a fell race. The fun runners and walkers will cover a seven-mile course that culminates at Bwlch Gwynt while the fell runners’ course is over a rugged 14 miles that includes ascents of Foel Eryr and Foel Drygarn. The three Rotary Clubs will host the event, while the fell race is being organised by the Ingli Runners and the events will start an hour apart. The fell runners will head off over the course at 12.00pm and the walkers will cross the start line at 11.00am.

Outdoor challenge

The idea of the Challenge was to introduce as many people as possible to a great outdoor event in the Pembrokeshire National Park and add a charitable purpose to their enjoyment.

“We hope that the Preseli Bluestone Challenge will tempt the young and the ‘not so young’ to come out into the less well known part of the national park to enjoy themselves and raise some money for Welsh charities at the same time,” said Nigel Owen, one of the organisers from the Rotary club of Fishguard & Goodwick.

Good causes - and well sponsored

Many of the walkers and runners will be seeking to earn sponsorship for leading Welsh charities such as Tŷ Hafan, the family hospice for young lives; Ambiwlans Awyr Cymru (Welsh Air Ambulance) and the Cadwagan Preservation Trust as well as Rotary charities by taking part in the event. The event has attracted sponsorship support from some leading companies in West Wales including: Chevron; Pathfinders Countryside; QinetoQ; Summerdale Coaches; Princes Gate; TriExercise and Coast & Country Cottages.

Details of how to enter the ‘Preseli Bluestone Challenge’ fun run and walk can be obtained by writing to Nigel Owen, PBC, Penrhiw, Fishguard, Pembrokeshire SA65 9TD or by clicking on the event’s own website: www.preselibluestonechallenge.com. If you are energetic enough to take part in the fell run then you can find entry details by clicking on www.inglirunners.ukpages.org or by contacting Shân Roberts direct on Tel: 01239 821070.

Pembroke ABC entertain capacity crowd

Pembroke Amateur Boxing Club held their second home show of the season in front of a capacity crowd at the Pater Hall, Pembroke Dock, with seven bouts of the highest quality for them to enjoy.

Head coach Ralph Gammer took on a new role as MC and Andy Edmundson was the match-maker, and both were pleased with the performances of their young charges as they took on opponents from all over South Wales.

Cracking start

Pembroke’s Micky McDonagh got the show off to a cracking start as the 11 year old beat Luke Higgins (Carmarthen ABC) on points as he showed the promise built on hard work in the gym – and he received further reward when he was adjudged ‘Best Pembroke Boxer’ at the end of the show to pick up another smashing trophy.

Excellent debut

Dolfey Burns made his debut for Pembroke in a junior bout against Joey Wray (Carmarthen ABC) and it was an action-packed contest before Wray’s greater experience helped him to a narrow points decision in the closing stages. Although Burns was disappointed with not making it a winning debut there was real consolation in the fact that this bout was adjudged the best of the evening by the judges, headed by Narberth’s official in charge John Phillips, and both youngsters received special trophies to mark that fact.

Charlene comes out on top again

Charlene Jones has become a regular on home shows and took on Katie Flynn, of Merlins Bridge ABC for the second time. It was a contest that was even better than the first time they met and the result was never really sealed until the last round when Jones upped the pace and gained a deserved points verdict over a very good opponent.

Sture succeeds

Sean Sture boxed against Oliver Didcott (Trostre ABC) in the first senior bout of the night and maintained his good form to take a points verdict from a very strong opponent, boxing well behind his jab and never letting Didcott gain the upper hand.

Lee just loses out

Lee Wagenes was another Pembroke ABC member who boxed very well on the night but just missed out against the strong John Lumb from Cardigan ABC. Both boxers are experienced and really entertained the crowd with their boxing skills before Lumb shaded the verdict when it might have gone either way.

Thank yous

Pembroke ABC would like to thank the following for their support on the night:

Carl Davey, Interserve

Rob Edwards, Pembroke Dock Cricket Club

Supporters at Dragon LNG

Jim Lade, Pembroke Haven Residential Home

All the regular supporters who help out at every show

Kyle Morrison

Congratulations

Pembroke ABCs talented 15 year old Kyle Morrison has just progressed to the British Junior Championships in Scotland from 11 th to 14 th June after picking up his third Welsh vest by recently winning his Welsh Final at Baglan Social Club, Port Talbot. Well done Kyle!

A new era began for the Pembrokeshire Referees’

Helmut and DannySociety when Haverfordwest’s Steve Evans took on the role of Chairman of the Society at the recently held AGM.  He will be supported by President Danny Thomas from Pembroke and Treasurer Ian Baxter of Carmarthen.  Jonathan Twigg, also from Haverfordwest, fills the post of vice chairman whilst being acting secretary alongside Keith McNiffe of Pembroke as the society search for a suitable incumbent.

President Danny Thomas presented the most promising referees’ award for 2008/9 to Johnston’s Helmut Reinhardt, who will possibly be a level six referee next year whilst continuing with his duties on the Welsh League.  The referee’s referee of the year was Steve Williams of Hundleton, who also received a memento as he stood down from his position as Chairman.  A similar presentation was made to Jonathan Twigg who relinquished the role of Secretary after several seasons at the helm.

Steve Williams, Jonathan Twigg and Chris Stapleton were newly elected honorary members after their roles as officers of the society over many years were acknowledged, alongside new Honorary Vice Presidents Chris Jenkins (Friar Vaults Haverfordwest) and Anthony Finnegan (A&A Scaffolding, Pembroke).

The Society continues to go from strength to strength with between eighteen and twenty-five members attending each monthly meeting, which takes place on the second Sunday of each month at Neyland Athletic Club, kicking off at 6.30 p.m.  The members are indebted also to the sterling work of Pedr McMullen in his role as RAW Chairman and also the instructor on the new referee courses run by the WWFA.

Members have been rewarded this year through three sponsorships, with the Friars Vaults (provision of a jacket), A&A Scaffolding (provision of a warm-up jacket) and for the 27 th consecutive year, Chevron Refinery.  Without these sponsorships members acknowledged that subscription fees would have to be raised.

Jonathan receives Pembroke’s Award of Merit

Jonathan receives Pembroke’s Award of MeritJonathan Thomas was the recipient of an Award of Merit at the Pembroke Town Council Annual Awards Evening held in the Town Hall, Pembroke recently, for his services to rugby and his home town.
Jonathan was born in Hundleton and plays at flanker for The Ospreys and Wales. He started out playing for Pembroke RFC Juniors before his talent was spotted and he progressed to play for Swansea RFC and played for Wales at Under 16, Under 19 and Under 21 level before making his full international debut against Australia in 2003. To date, he has played 47 times for Wales and has scored 7 tries – and he was part of the Welsh side that won the Grand Slam in 2005 and 2008.
A modest unassuming man, he has never forgotten his connection with Pembroke and is always willing to support local events and offer encouragement to younger players. Jonathan is a credit to his sport. Unfortunately, Jonathan was unable to attend the Awards Evening but collected his certificate from the mayor a few days previously, stating that it will take pride of place in his new home in Swansea.

Well done JT
