Ormond Youth Cup Final

Whitland skipper Scott Newton holds cup aloftSuper-six success
for Colin’s boys

Whitland (110 for 8 & 128 for 3) beat Carew (122 for 4 & 115 for 3)

Umpires: Denis Chiffi & John Williams

Scorers: Richard Merriman (Whitland) and Mike Scourfield (Carew)

Man of the Match Adjudicators: Emma & John Summons (Johnston)

Venue: Carew

Whitland Youth maintained their remarkable run in the Ormond Cup as they made it a sixth success on the trot against their counterparts from Carew, who held the upper hand for much of the game but helped bring about their own downfall as they gave away no fewer than 51 runs from wides whilst their opponents conceded only 16 runs.

But Pembrokeshire Cricket’s future is in good hands, based on this excellent match where there was some excellent batting from Carew’s Tom and Stefan Davies, plus Whitland's Matthew Webb, Nathan Evans and Aled Davies, fine bowling that included a hat-trick from man of the match Stefan Davies, very good fielding and a smashing stumping from Carew keeper Tom Scourfield.

Winners WhitlandSmall wonder that Whitland coach Colin John was delighted afterwards as he told PembrokeshireSport.co.uk,

“We showed some typical Whitland doggedness today and we needed it because Carew were superb opponents and I feel for them because they must be really disappointed.”

Wes Cole, the Carew coach, was also full of praise for his team:

"Whitland are a good, experienced team but we have nine of these youngsters still available next season and it has been a pleasure to work with such a great crowd of lads."

Runners up CarewBig hitting from Tom

Carew had skipper Tom Davies to thank for their first innings’ tally as he scored a cracking 80 out of 122 for 4 in their allotted 20 overs, made from only 66 deliveries and including four fours and six sixes before he was finally bowled by Aled Davies seeking another big hit. He shared in a stand of 50 with Ceri Brace, who scored just four runs but gave Davies the strike whenever possible. Dominic Hicks also chipped in with a late 11 not out in only eight balls and there were 14 extras as Carew set a challenging total. Scott Newton was the pick of the Whitland bowling with 2 for 29 whilst Matthew Webb and Aled Davies claimed a wicket apiece and Dan James only conceded 19 runs in his five overs.

Man of match Stefan DaviesShattering start for Whitland as Stefan strikes

Whitland’s hopes of a big score were shattered when Stefan Davies steamed in for Carew and clean bowled Nathan Evans, skipper Scott Newton and Owain Evans in successive deliveries to reduce Whitland to 12 for 3 which soon became 20 for 4 as Aled Davies departed after smashing a big six.

Matthew Webb sensibly dropped anchor for Whitland and contributed a very important 35 before he was bowled by Tom Davies whilst Nico Setaro 22 contributed 22 runs before he was neatly stumped by Tom Scourfield off Ceri Brace – and Whitland only reached 110 for 8 thanks to 23 from ‘Mr Extras’, 17 of which were wides.

Scott Newton receives trophy from Trefor EvansCarew collect more runs

Carew looked likely to score more big runs after tea and although they lost James Hinchcliffe early to Matthew Webb they had a stand of 83 between Tom Davies and his namesake Stefan before Stefan was well caught at long on by Nico Setaro for 47, which included six fours and two sixes. Tom Davies belted two fours and four sixes in his undefeated 49 as Scott Newton was again the pick of the bowlers with 2 for 17 at a time when he managed to slow the flow of runs so that Carew finished up on 115 for 3, about 20 runs short of what they might have hoped for.

Second slump for Whitland

It left Whitland needing 128 runs for victory but they slumped to 9 for 2 as first innings top scorer Matthew Webb was bowled first ball by Tom Davies, followed by Owain Evans as Tom Scourfield pouched the catch off Stefan Davies.

Tom Davies belts a sixNathan Evans and Aled Davies settled things down for Whitland, however, and they put on 50 runs in as many deliveries and their 100 partnership also came at a run a ball. Davies was eventually stumped superbly by Scourfield off Brace for 46 runs, which included four fours and three sixes.

It was still anybody’s game at that stage but Carew continued to bowl wides and Nathan Evans took Whitland to victory with an undefeated 39, which contained three fours, with 34 wides from Carew allowing Whitland to win with 11 balls to spare.

Post-match presentations

The post-match presentations were organised by Trefor Evans, chairman of the Antur Pembrokeshire Cricket League and he rightly praised both teams for producing a splendid final, as well as the umpires, scorers, groundsmen and tea ladies for doing an excellent job. The trophies were presented, on behalf of sponsor Tony Pigeon, by Cyril Coles, the president of Carew Cricket Club, with a delighted Scott Newton receiving the silverware to make it six on the trot for Whitland – and with some consolation for Carew as Stefan Davies was adjudged man of the match by Emma and John Summons.
