Rugby Fixtures Preview for 12th September 2009

Division One (West):

Corus v Whitland
Whitland face a tough tussle against the Steel Men because Corus beat Llangennech away by 33-18 to start their season well. They had Chris MacDonald as a player/coach last year and a big pack – and it will be a real test for the Borderers. Verdict: I think Corus might just snatch the verdict!

Narberth v Felinfoel
Narberth played superbly to upset the odds at Bridgend in their previous match and they now entertain a Felinfoel side which edged home by 24-21 against Builth Wells. Verdict: The Otters to win, especially with home advantage.

Division Three (West):

Cardigan v Llandeilo
Cardigan were defeated narrowly last Saturday and will be eager to register their first victory against a Llandeilo side which beat Morriston 15-10 with home advantage. Verdict: Cardigan coach Nev Roberts will  have sorted out a few basic errors this week and so I think the Teifisiders might just get through in this clash.

Gorseinon v Crymych
Crymych travel to Gorseinon, who lost by a single point at Penclawdd in their opener but could do well this season, whilst the Preseli Men came from behind to defeat Llanelli Wanderers. Verdict: Crymych to make it two wins in a row!

Haverfordwest v Newcastle Emlyn
Haverfordwest played well at Laugharne, with new centre Sion Morgan catching the eye on his debut – but Newcastle Emlyn started with a bang by beating Llanybydder 25-16. Verdict: This is a tough one but I have to go for Emlyn – although I really hope the Blues prove me wrong!

Division Four (West):

Hendy v Milford Haven
Milford Haven have a strong squad for their trip to Hendy, who lost 17-16 at Betws last week, with key ball winners in Aidan Laxton, Gareth Fawcett and Ben Johnson.. Verdict: It won’t be plain sailing for the Mariners but they should come away with another victory.

Pembroke Dock Quins v Amman United
The Quins lost quite heavily at Tumble but should be a different kettle of fish at home to Amman United, who previously lost 32-16 at home to Cefneithin. Verdict: The Quins to break their points duck and perhaps gain a bonus point.

Pontarddulais v Pembroke
Pembroke looked a useful unit against Tenby but the Bont are traditionally strong at home and won at Burry Port by 37-25 in their first game to show their mettle. Verdict: This will be a real test of Pembroke’s potential but I feel that the Bont might just ease home by a narrow margin.

Tenby United v Tumble
Tenby have a relatively inexperienced squad and lost at Pembroke - but with some very useful prospects nonetheless. They entertain a Tumble outfit who beat the Quins by 33-9 with home advantage. Verdict: Tumble might be just be too street-wise for  the Seasiders so early in the season.

Division Five (West):

Llangwm v Penygroes
Llangwm lost at St Clears but will look forward to a home game against Penygroes, who showed their talent in beating St Davids 51-27. Richard Scriven is now helping the Wasps in coaching, and skipper Nick Phillips will gee his boys up for this one. Verdict: Penygroes look useful and will be clear favourites for this one.

Neyland v Bynea
Neyland played really well to win at Llanelli Wanderers and now have Bynea, who lost 39-3 at home to Aberaeron, as visitors to the Athletic Ground. Verdict: A definite victory for the All Blacks – and with a bonus point as well.

St Davids v Fishguard
This is always a hard-fought local derby but the Seagulls are hot favourites after their 53-3 thrashing of Pontyates. The Saints lost heavily at Penygroes but will be up for this one. Verdict: Fishguard to win but they cannot underestimate St Davids at home!
