Pembrokeshire’s Special Olympics team return in triumph
Pembrokeshire’s talented Special Olympics team returned in triumph from their recently held Olympiad at New Cross College, Leicester, having amassed an amazing medal tally of 13 gold, 12 silver and 15 bronze in the four days of competition.
It meant that every competitor stood on the podium to collect their awards and their delight was evident, as was that of their families, who had travelled in hordes to provide wonderful support.
Outstanding successes
Small wonder then that coach Jean Jones was delighted because she also led the Welsh team and the judges made very positive comments about the quality of performance as they collected, including Pembrokeshire’s massive haul, no fewer than 23 gold, 19 silver and 25 bronze medals, plus a further 36 ribbons for competitors who did well but didn’t quite make the first three.
Also performing superbly was the county’s sole swimmer in the competition, Richard Young, from Penally, who received gold medals for his 50 metre freestyle and 50 metres backstroke, a bronze for the medley relay and a fourth-place ribbon as a bonus – so it was small wonder that Richard was also thrilled, as was his dad Steve Young, the swimming coach.
Heard work rewarded and a great send-off
This heart-warming success followed tremendous fundraising and support from many individuals’ and organisations in Pembrokeshire as £10,000 was raised to support the athletes. They had a wonderful send off from county hall in Haverfordwest with the Chairperson of the county council, mayors of local towns, county councillors, friends and families all turning out, along with Jim Hughes from Radio Pembrokeshire, to give them a send off worthy of any athlete as eleven gymnasts and one swimmer left for the Special Olympics.
Memorable opening ceremony and captivating police
On arriving in Leicester the accommodation provided for all the Welsh teams was at Beaumont Hall, part of Leicester University. Everyone in Leicester gave the team a warm welcome, transport was provided for every venue and volunteers supported the team. The opening ceremony took place in Walker’s Stadium – an absolutely tremendous experience for the team – to march into the ground to the roar of the crowds in the stands, and then to sit and be entertained by many performers, including the New Beautiful South.
Security in their accommodation was provided by members of Leicester Constabulary, who not only provided security but were fantastic as they integrated with the team, playing football with the athletes, allowing athletes to wear their hats, handcuffs and also offering rides in the riot van!
Looking forward
And what for the future? … Steve Young and Jean Jones hope to encourage other sports to join Special Olympics Pembrokeshire, Wales and GB, and it is hoped to hold a ‘come and try’ day for the future athletes and their coaches.
