Chevron continues to pump up schools’ sport

Jane James (back left) is pictured with youngsters enjoying their fun football session at FishguardChevron will continue to champion sport in Pembrokeshire since the oil giant, which has a refinery at Pembroke Dock, has agreed to continue its sponsorship of Sport Pembrokeshire – the sports development arm of Pembrokeshire County Council.
The partnership is believed to be the longest running sports development sponsorship in Wales and Chevron’s funding will help deliver a range of sports development projects across the County, including fun football, junior tennis, netball, schools cricket and disability sport as well as the annual Sport Pembrokeshire Awards.

Jane joins in the fun

The continued support was announced last week by Chevron’s new Policy, Government and Public Affairs Manager, Jane James.
Mrs James, who recently attended a fun football session at Fishguard, said such sessions symbolised the good work done by Sport Pembrokeshire, which was why the company wanted to continue its support.
“This fun football scheme encourages girls and boys of whatever ability and includes those not in local league teams – it really is about developing grassroots sport and highlighting that sport should also be about having fun,” she said.

Cllr Rob is thrilled

Councillor Rob Lewis, Cabinet Member for Sport and Leisure, said Chevron and its predecessor company Texaco had now been sponsoring Sport Pembrokeshire for over 20 years.
“This partnership is the longest running sports development sponsorship in Wales and has received accolades from the Sports Council, including the prestigious Sports Sponsor of the Year Award. We are delighted that Chevron intends to continue the partnership,” he said.

Manager says thanks

John Deason, Manager of Sport Pembrokeshire said grass roots sport was very reliant on support from sponsors.

“In the present climate of economic recession, and of much sports funding being diverted to the Olympics, we are doubly grateful to Chevron’s commitment to stick by us.”
