Cardiff and the Vale under 10s (134 for 5) beat Pembrokeshire under 10s (118 for 7)
Venue: Llandaff Cathedral Cricket
County under 10s battle bravely in first defeat
The Pembrokeshire under 10’s finished up 16 runs short against a strong Cardiff and the Vale side in a match played on the beautiful Cathedral Ground in Cardiff, losing their 100% record but playing well, nonetheless.
Hard work in the field
Pembrokeshire lost the toss and the team were asked to field first on a dry track, with Murphy and Coaker opening the bowling at real pace but without the luck of a wicket. Kieran O’ Connor and Jac Waters finished with excellent figures with only three runs each knocked of their four-over spells. Whilst Ben Palin and Oliver Richards bowled with precision, Callum Woods bowled his off-spin backed up by the leg-spin of Toby Poole, which slowed the run rate down with Poole taking the wicket of opening bat Simon Adam and Richards removing Lee Alex for his top score of 37.
Callum James of Hook bowled superbly with two wickets for 12 runs in his spell and there was also some excellent wicket- keeping from Liam Cullen which helped to keep the score down as Cardiff and the Vale innings finished on 134 for 5 in their 35 overs.
Slow start for county
Opening the innings for Pembrokeshire were Sean Coaker of Narberth and Kieran O’Connor from Fishguard but unfortunately O’Connor was adjudged lbw without scoring. Coaker went on to score an excellent 19 before being bowled and No 3 Jac Waters was unlucky to be out to an excellent delivery. Woods from Burton batted with authority and scored a rapid 24 before he was bowled, Hicks from Carew batted very well, showing his potential for the future and Callum James came to the crease and played with style before being bowled for 10 runs.
With the county needing quick runs Griffiths came to the crease with Palin but just ran out of overs, falling 16 runs short as he was 14 not out and Palin 8 not out when Pembrokeshire ended up on 118 for 7 in 35 overs.
12th July npower National Village Cup Competition:
Cresselly make it to quarter Finals
Cresselly (172 all out) beat Marshfield (144 all out)
Umpires: Reg Shah (Cardiff) & Ken Jones (Llanelli)
Scorer: David Richards (Cresselly)
Cresselly deservedly reached the quarter-final draw for the National Village Cup competition, sponsored by npower, as they outfought Marshfield, a village about six miles from Bath and Gloucestershire area champions.
Cresselly made a bright start in reaching 95 for 2 in only 14 of their allotted 40 overs, but collapsed to 143 for 9 before they showed they are a strong all-round batting line-up with 29 very important runs from their last-wicket pairing of Neilson Cole and Stefan Jenkins which gave their final tally a far more challenging look.
Cresselly captain Simon Cole topped the scoring with five fours and a six in his 32 whilst Adam Chandler scored even quicker as he rapped six boundaries in his 29, ably assisted by Lyn Richards (25). Then came that partnership of 29 from Neilson Cole (17 not out) and Stefan Jenkins, who was run out from the last ball of the match for 12 runs.
Tight bowling and superb fielding
Marshfield looked strong in their early batting line-up but good bowling by Cresselly, aided by even better fielding in which Andrew Harris, Adam Chandler and Lyn Richards took brilliant boundary catches, meant that they were always able to keep the visitors behind the required run rate.
Marshfield’s main runs came from Bill Johnston (36), James Williams (26) and Bobby Jenkins (23) but Cresselly kept taking wickets regularly through Stefan Jenkins, who completed a good all-round performance with 3 for 34 alongside Richard Harris (3 for 17 as reward for an immaculate line and length) and there was support from Ryan Lewis (2 for 45) and skipper Cole, who staked his claim for the man of the match award with 2 for 21 to help Cresselly through to the last eight.
They now play either Miskin Manor (Glamorganshire) or Aston Rowant (Oxfordshire) a week Sunday for a place in the semi-final of the competition where the final is always played at Lords. Well done the Cresselly lads!
Alan Brown Cup Final:
Dock delighted by rare silverware
Pembroke Dock (116 for 9 & 108 for 9) beat Crymych (63 all out & 112 for 8)
Umpires: Peter Perry & Phil Marsden
Scorers: Nicole Lloyd (Pembroke Dock) and Dyfed Sion (Crymych)
Pembroke Dock scooped their first piece of silverware for almost 40 years as they beat Crymych in this replayed final at Whitland where they established a big first innings lead of 53 runs and were always on top after tea.
This was never likely to be a match similar to the previous Sunday, which had been ruined by rain after a high-scoring innings apiece had set the stage for a real run-fest on a fast track, with this pitch inevitably soft after so much rain had left Whitland ground staff doing really well to make sure the game went ahead.
Dock assume first innings control
Pembroke Dock batted first and reached a steady 116 for 9 in their allotted 20 overs, thanks to Julian Edwards (two fours in his 23), Nick Daley (26), Peter Kingdom (17) and Jamie White (13) as Rhys Davies and Murray Briggs shared six wickets for Crymych from their five-over spells. There was also a wicket apiece from Dai Dearden and Dai Jenkins as Pembroke Dock reached a healthy total thanks to the inclusion of 18 runs from ‘Mr Extras’.
It suddenly seemed a very big score because Jamie White grabbed 4 for 17 to leave Crymych struggling at the crease, despite a useful knock from Gary Nicholas (16), as brother Rob and Elgan Vittle were the only other Crymych batsmen able to manage double figures. Jason Coles’ wily slow stuff earned him figures of 2 for 15 and John Cumani picked up 1 for 15 as Crymych were dismissed for only 63 in 16.3 overs.
Jak e jolts Crymych
Jake Davies led the Dock’s second innings well with three fours in his top score of 42 as David Dunfee blitzed two sixes in his 24 so that although Murray Briggs claimed 5 for 20 alongside Jenkins (1 for 18), Dearden (1 for 27) and Rhys Davies (2 for 36) the Dock were able to reach a reasonable 108 for 9 wickets, thanks to another 15 extras, to set Crymych a highly unlikely target of 162 runs for victory.
There was some useful Crymych batting by Jacob Lloyd (22) and Osian Wyn (18) as Dearden and Owain Enill belted sixes but didn’t stay long enough to influence the result. Cumani (3 for 25) and White (3 for 23) made sure that the Dock stayed in charge as Dunfee (1 for 20) and Coles also bowled tight spells to help the Dock to a 49-run victory.
Post match presentations
At the post-match presentation, Richard Merriman, chairman of the Pembrokeshire Association of Cricket Umpires and Scorers, welcomed everyone to Whitland for the match and thanked those involved for their support, especially the ladies for another superb tea. Barry Webb, of sponsors Tavernspite Nurseries, presented the man of the match award to Jake Davies (Pembroke Dock) whilst John Williams, the president of the Pembrokeshire Association of Cricket Umpires and Scorers, presented the silverware to Pembroke Dock and the individual trophies to both teams.
No-one was more delighted than Dock veteran Maurice Leyland, who told everyone in attendance that it had been 38 years since the club had picked up any silverware – and no-one there could deny that the victory was fully deserved for their total commitment to the cause throughout a match played in the very best of spirits and a great advertisement for this popular competition. Congratulations to Pembroke Cricket Club Dock from pembrokeshiresport.co.uk -
6th July 2009 Pembrokeshire Under 11s win well in North Wales Eryri (122 for 9) lost to Pembrokeshire (175 for 1) The game was reduced to 35 overs due to the rain that was predicted but a tremendous effort was made by Llanrwst C.C. and their dedicated ground staff, where the covers came on and off at least eight times, to allow the game to be played to a conclusion. Asked to bat first, Alex Codd and Kurtis Marsh put on 37 in 12 overs before Codd (7) was bowled by Jack Sissons. This was to be the only wicket for Eryri with Kurtis batting for 35 overs for 62 n.o. (7 fours) and Scott Jones 63 n.o. (10 fours). Both batted extremely well, with no chances given. There were shots all around the ground with Kurtis cutting well and strong off his legs whilst Scott drove hard through mid-off and the covers. One particular over went for 18 runs and Pembrokeshire ended up on a challenging 175 for 1 wicket in their 35 overs. Good bowling, assisted by fine fielding Pembrokeshire opening bowlers, George Williams and Greg Thompson, bowled their usual economical spells, but it was left to Tomos Lewis and Thomas Pritchard to take the first wickets. Geraint Jones clean bowled Adam Thomas for 24 and Ewan Meredith, bowling for the first time, picked up the wickets of Ryan Bean (13) and Jack Hughes (18), to leave the Eryri middle order decimated. It was at this time that the rain intervened on numerous occasions and both sides did well to continue. The Pembrokeshire fielding continues to improve with each game and there were three excellent run outs by Jacob Knox, Jack Parkinson and Scott Jones, aided by Phillip Llewellyn. Alex Codd took the ninth wicket and Eryri ended on 122 – 9 in their 35 overs. Avril Platten did an excellent job of scoring in difficult conditions and it was lovely to hear the umpires comments that of the three regional games they had taken part in, the Pembrokeshire team were the most well mannered, with excellent behaviour, but still remained competitive. The team started their long journey home at 5-15 p.m., only for an accident at Dolgellau to block the road and add two hours to a long journey. Fish and chips at Barmouth was scant reward and at the of the day, bed was long overdue, but with the memory of a wonderful win by this talented team of dedicated young players. pembrokeshiresport.co.uk says well done to the Pembrokeshire players! Pembrokeshire Under 11s: Alex Codd (Neyland), Kurtis Marsh (Kilgetty), Scott Jones (Neyland), Phillip Llewellyn (Neyland), Geraint Jones (Whitland), Jack Parkinson (Carew), Tomos Lewis (Carew), Ewan Meredith (Kilgetty), Jacob Knox (Carew), George Williams (Neyland), Greg Thompson (Stackpole), Thomas Pritchard (Neyland)

County Under 15s Cricket:
Morgan makes his mark in superb county show
Pembrokeshire Under 15s (268 for 7) beat Cardiff and the Vale Under 16s (83 all out)
Venue: Imble Lane, Pembroke Dock
Umpires: John Williams & Peter Perry
Scorer: Mark Venables (Burton)
A superb innings of 136 by Fishguard’s Matthew Morgan was the undoubted highlight as Pembrokeshire’s talented under 15 cricketers secured an impressive win over their counterparts from Cardiff and the Vale of Glamorgan on an excellent batting track at Imble Lane, Pembroke Dock.
The county youngsters batted first and scored a huge 268 for 7 before shooting out the opposition for only 83 to give an impressive winning margin of 185 runs. Leading the way in the batting stakes was Morgan, who had 21 boundaries in his top knock of 136, ably assisted by 34 from Ryan Davies (Herbrandston), 16 from Scott Griffiths (St Ishmaels) and 15 by Dominic Hicks (Carew).
Adash Aji (2 for 35) and Sam Pickford (2 for 42) were the pick of the opposition bowlers and Aji scored 16 in support of a top score of 32 by Alex Kurobasi when Cardiff and the Vale batted but they couldn’t fend off some good bowling from Carew’s Dominic Hicks (3 for 17), James Hinchcliffe (2 for 20) and Luke Hicks (2 for 36), plus Pembroke Dock’s David Dunfee (2 for 14).
Well done the Pembrokeshire Under 15s!

The county under 10’s had their third win in a row for the season against Cardiff and the Vale in a thrilling match with one ball and one wicket to spare.
County contain well in the field
County captain for the day Thomas Murphy lost the toss and the team were asked to field first on a decent track and Murphy opened the bowling with real pace but without the luck of taking a wicket. Backing him up the other end was Kieran O’Connor, taking 1 for 11 in his four over spell, Sean Coaker, who also bowled with accuracy and took a wicket, Ben Palin and Jac Waters, whilst other wicket takers on the day were Toby Poole and Oliver Richards.
Iori Hicks made his debut and bowled his medium pace and ended up with figures of 0 for 11 in his 4 overs.
Excellent keeping by Liam Cullen helped with two excellent run outs by Oliver Richards and Toby Poole, which finished the
Cardiff innings on 110 for 6 in their allotted 35 overs
.
Solid batting builds the tally
Opening the innings for Pembrokeshire were James Davies of Burton and Haverfordwest’s Kieran Griffiths, who got the innings off to a good start, but then both got out cheaply followed by Kieran O’Conner. Toby Poole from Kilgetty came to the crease with the innings on 27 for 3 and continued his recent excellent form as he batted until the 34th over for his 11 runs, with excellent support from Tom Murphy, who aggressively hit a quick 11 runs with two boundaries.
Jac Waters took his club form and batted brilliantly until a direct hit run him out with a few overs to go but debutant Hicks played very straight until he was bowled, Ben Palin supported the innings well towards the end, Oliver Richards and Tom Hughes stayed composed and on the 5 th ball of the final over Richards played a late cut and they scrambled the winning run to see the boys keep up their unbeaten record this the season, with a thrilling game for the crowd to enjoy as they won from the penultimate ball of the last over. Well done lads from pembrokeshiresport.co.uk 24th June 2009
Pembrokeshire under 10’s win tight game
Pembrokeshire under 10s (91 for 8) beat Mid Glamorgan under 10s (90 for 6)
Venue: Cresselly Cricket Club
Pembrokeshire’s under 10’s cricketers had their first fixture of the season against their counterparts fromMid Glamorgan and came away with a deserved win after an excellent all-round team performance.
Good work by Pembs in the field
County captain Kieran Griffiths won the toss and elected to field before Sean Coaker opened the bowling with an excellent spell of seam bowling which claimed two early wickets whilst backing him up the other end with real pace was Tom Murphy, who bowled
sharply and moved the ball without the luck of taking a wicket. Other bowlers who bowled well on the day were Kieran Griffiths, who took one wicket, Liam Cullen who bowled with accuracy for his wicket, Ben Palin, Jac Waters, Oliver Richards, Callum James and Kieran O’Connor also backed the front line bowlers with precision.
In the slow bowling department Callum Woods bowled with good control, from the other end Toby Poole bowled his off spin nicely, taking a wicket with a well flighted delivery. Tom Murphy and Liam Cullen took two excellent catches backed up with a good performance behind the stumps from Philip Llewellyn as Mid Glamorgan finished up on 90 for 6 from their allotted 35 overs.
Sound batting start
Pembrokeshire got off to a good batting start via Sean Coaker and Philip Llewellyn before Llewellyn was caught and Coaker was bowled.
Kieran Griffiths continued his recent club form and with Toby Poole batting at number four put on a good partnership of 35 before Griffiths was caught going for an attacking shot, but contributed an excellent 16 to the total.
Poole held the innings together while losing two more quick wickets in Liam Cullen and then Tom Murphy, before another good partnership with Kieran O’Conner, who batted with authority.
Poole went for a pull shot and was caught after scoring 10 valuable runs and local boy Oliver Richards came to the crease with O’Connor and played with urgency as Pembrokeshire required eight runs to win off two overs. Richards finished with six runs while O’Connor was given out lbw on the last ball of the 34
th
over. Ben Palin and Jac Waters held their nerve and Pembrokeshire won with two balls to spare in a thrilling game that the Cresselly crowd enjoyed.
Griffiths and Poole see off West Glamorgan
Pembrokeshire under 10s (143 for 4) beat West Glamorgan under 10s (75 for 9)
Venue: Hook CC
Kieran Griffiths of Haverfordwest and Toby Poole of Kilgetty batted especially well against a strong West Glamorgan side as they put together a partnership of 112 runs which saw Pembrokeshire to victory in their second regional game of the season.
Griffiths in control
Poole lost the toss and the team were put into bat by West Glamorgan with Sean Coaker opening the batting with Griffiths but was bowled without scoring before Kieran O’Connor came in and was unlucky to be run out second ball for
a single so Pembrokeshire were 2 for 2 off 2 overs.
But Poole and Griffiths batted sensibly and Griffiths reached an excellent 50, backed up with good support from Poole before the latter was bowled for 17 in the 30
th
over. Liam Cullen came into bat and looked in good form before being caught for two runs
and James Davies (Burton) took to the crease as the youngest member of the team but batted with great determination and carried his bat to the end of the innings for six runs. Kieran Griffiths showed his real potential as he finished up on 63 not out for Pembrokeshire.
Tom Murphy and Jac Waters, both from Kilgetty, opened the bowling for Pembrokeshire, backed up by some steady stuff from Kieran O’Connor and Sean Coaker, who took a wicket in his first over.
Attacking play by Pembs
West Glamorgan were 20 for 4 due to an excellent direct hit run out by Kieran Griffiths who also took a wicket in his two-over spell. Thomas Hughes bowled well in his four over spell and took a wicket.
West Glamorgan then lost three quick wickets thanks to three run outs from terrific fielding by Toby Poole in the deep and also Sean Coaker. David Cromwell played his first regional game and bowled very steadily down the hill in his four over spell, Callum James bowled his good normal line and length whilst Liam Cullen kept well behind the
stumps so that West Glamorgan came to a close on 75 for 9
after being well beaten by a very promising Pembrokeshire team.

County under 12s lose to very strong West Glam
Pembrokeshire Under 12’s (98 all out) lost to West Glamorgan Under 12’s (99 for 3)
Venue: Cresselly CC
Umpires: Tony Scourfield (Carew) & Phil Marsden (Tenby) Toby Hayman produced a splendid hat-trick for Pembrokeshire Under 12s against their counterparts from West Glamorgan but they still went down to a seven-wicket defeat as the visitors showed their all-round strength.
Hard work batting
Pembrokeshire won the toss and decided to bat on an excellent Cresselly wicket with a fast outfield. Pembrokeshire’s captain, Jack Davies, opened the batting with his Burton team mate Toby Hayman and they looked quite solid for the first ten overs. A heavy shower of rain interrupted play for about half an hour and when play resumed the wicket showed a little more life which caused the batsmen more trouble and Toby was cleaned bowled by
Wickets continued to fall at regular intervals and things looked bleak at 59 for 7 wickets. However, after a solid batting performance from Jack Davies (13), plus a few lusty blows from Harry Thomas (Cresselly) and George Thomas (Haverfordwest), Pembrokeshire eventually finished all out for 98 in the 33 rd over.
Donald drives West Glam
West Glamorgan’s opening pair put on 51 for the 1 st wicket in only 11 overs and didn’t look in any danger until change bowler Toby Hayman, with the last ball of his second over, removed Tom Blake caught and bowled for 14. With the first ball of his third over he had Edwards LBW for 0 and from his next ball he had Harries caught by Brennan Devonald (St Ishmaels) without scoring.
This was the only glimmer of hope for Pembrokeshire as Welsh opening batsman Donald continued to stroke the ball powerfully to all parts of the field. The game came to an end in the 19 th over, with a beautiful cover drive for 4 to leave him undefeated on 53.
Toby Hayman was the only bowler of any note and he finished on 3 wickets for 30 runs.
A big thank you to the parents for once again providing wonderful refreshments and Cresselly Cricket Club for making their ground and facilities available to the County and their groundsman, Glyn Cole, for preparing the wicket and outfield.
The next match is against Cardiff & the Vale at St Florence on Sunday 28 th June at 12 noon
21st June 2009
County Under 11s suffer first defeat
Cardiff & The Vale under 11s (122 all out) beat
Pembrokeshire under 11s (115 for 9) by seven runs
Pembrokeshire’s talented under 11 cricketers sustained their first defeat of the season when they went down by just seven runs in a tight finish against their counterparts from Cardiff & The Vale.
On a good batting track at Bosherston & Stackpole, Cardiff won the toss and elected to bat and it soon became evident that the bowling of both sides was of a very high standard and on the day this was going to be the stronger of the two disciplines.
Pembs bowl well
For Pembrokeshire, Greg Thompson and George Williams continued their tight opening spells where it was the turn of George to pick up the first wicket. Chris Van Os looked very stylish for Cardiff and started to build his innings. Geraint Jones and Tomos Lewis bowled a second tight spell with Geraint picking up the 2 nd wicket for Pembrokeshire. There were two good run outs by Alex Codd and George Williams, aided by Philip Llewellyn. Adi and Achi Khamaraj got into double figures for Cardiff and Chris Van Os went on to score 45. Alex Codd and Scott Jones took five wickets between them and there were six good catches by the Pembrokeshire team with George Williams being the pick of the bowlers with figures of 6.1-3-7-2.
Cardiff were bowled out in the 40 th over for 122, with the Pembrokeshire fielding getting better with every game.
Batting proves harder
It was a similar story when Pembrokeshire batted with James Caddy and Edwards Hayes conceding only seven runs in their opening spell, with Hayes picking up two wickets. Tristan Wharf, son of Glamorgan player Alex Wharf, and Cai Evans, son of Ieuan Evans, also bowled well with Kurtis Marsh and Scott Jones trying to build up some momentum. Alex Boorman, who in the end was the pick of the Cardiff bowlers with 3 –14, picked up the valuable wicket of Marsh, adjudged lbw for 12 runs. Wickets fell at regular intervals, with Geraint Jones looking good, before he was ran out. Jones went onto 40 runs, before he was stumped off the bowling of Adi Khamaraj. Tomos Lewis had an excellent knock of 15 not out and George Williams 7 not out with Pembrokeshire finishing 8 runs short in an absorbing game.
Thank yous The game was umpired by Alan Hansen and Mervyn John, making his debut, with both having good games. An excellent spread was laid on by the Pembrokeshire Ladies, which was thoroughly enjoyed both teams and sets of supporters. And lastly, a thank you to Phil Tallet and the Bosherston & Stackpole Club, who hosted the game.
Win double for County Under 12s
Pembrokeshire Under 12s (142 for 8) beat Carmarthenshire Under 12s (132 all out)
Venue: Oatfield Park, Burton After their recent comprehensive away win at Mid Glamorgan, the County’s under 12’s played host to their counterparts from Carmarthenshire on Sunday 14 th June at the Burton Cricket Club, and came away from an absorbing clash with victory by ten runs.
Solid county batting Carmarthenshire won the toss and asked Pembrokeshire to bat on a good wicket and fast outfield. Toby Hayman and Jack Davies, both from Burton, opened the batting and put on 26 for the first wicket before Jack was bowled by Matthew Pearce. Wickets then started to fall at regular intervals until Toby was joined by Steffan James (Whitland) and they started to push the score along until, unfortunately, Toby was caught behind off the bowling of Pearce for 24. Steffan was then joined by Harry Jones of Narberth and they took the score from 45 for 5 to 110 before Harry was LBW for 27. Steffan continued to stroke the ball all around the Oatfield ground but was well caught again off the bowling of Pearce for a deserved 42 (4 fours) and Pembrokeshire eventually finished on 142 for 8 off their 40 overs, with Pearce’ s bowling figures creditable 6 wickets for 18 runs in six overs.
Carmarthenshire start well When Carmarthenshire batted the opening bowling attack of Steffan James and Harry Thomas (Cresselly) tied the openers down for the first six overs but couldn’t make the break through. Toby Hayman and Conor Bowen (Whitland) then came onto bowl and began swinging the ball but the opening partnership was eventually broken by a run out from a direct throw from Steffan James. Matthew Pearce then came to the wicket with the score on 18 and he soon got into his stride with some powerful shots. Toby then bowled Jo Chiffi for 13 with the score on 44 and had another wicket thanks to a good catch by Jack Davies. Conor was not to be left out when he had the first of his three wickets, courtesy of a catch by Toby.
Brilliant catch swings the game for Pembrokeshire Wickets kept falling but all the time Pearce was scoring runs at the other end. He eventually was bowled for 65 by Steffan James when he came back on for his second spell. Carmarthenshire were still on course for the win but for the Pembrokeshire’s fielding, and none more so than a brilliant catch by George Thomas (Haverfordwest) off the bowling of Conor, and finished all out for 132 in the 35 th over. The main bowling figures were Steffan James (2 wickets for 8 runs in 8 overs), Toby Hayman (2 wickets for 34 in 6 overs) and Conor Bowen (3 wickets for 13 runs in 6.3 overs). Thanks to the Burton Cricket Club for putting on the fixture and to all the parents for the marvellous teas!

County under 11s keep on winning
West Glamorgan versus Pembrokeshire
Pembrokeshire Under 11s (173 all out) beat West Glamorgan under 11s (135 all out)
Pembrokeshire came away from the heartland of Welsh Cricket at West Glamorgan with an excellent win in a game that could have gone either way. The winning margin of 38 runs was due to the fighting spirit and character of the whole Pembrokeshire team, who fought back when West Glamorgan were in the driving seat with ten overs to go and seven wickets outstanding.
Good batting by Pembs
Pembrokeshire lost the toss and were given first use of a good wicket at Clydach. Kurtis Marsh and Alex Codd put on 36 in 12 overs, before Codd (20) was bowled by George John as Scott Thomas and James Phillips also bowled tight spells for West Glamorgan. Scott Jones and Kurtis put on 99 for the next wicket before Marsh (41) fell lbw to Matthew Blake, who ended with 2 for 15. Jones pushed onto 62, before being well caught by Scott Thomas off Rhys Phillips, who ended up with 2-9. Ewan Meredith, making his debut for Pembrokeshire, batted well, together with Jacob Knox, who must now be looking to move up the order next week. Pembrokeshire ended on 173 all out in 37 overs.
Strong start by West Glam
West Glamorgan reply started strongly with Matthew Blake and Anthony Thomas, batting well and being particularly harsh on some short bowling by the Pembrokeshire team. George Williams bowled a very tight spell conceding only 5 runs together with Tomas Lewis but West Glam reached 68 in 17 overs.
It was now the spin kings of Codd, Jones and Marsh who slowed the run rate down with Codd and Jones bowling five successive maidens between them. However, West Glam responded strongly with Matthew Blake and Scott Thomas throwing caution to the wind. They took the score up to 97 in the 26 th over, before two excellent run outs by Geraint & Scott Jones, aided by Philip Llewellyn, swung the game again as West Glam only needed 60 off the last 10 overs with 7 wickets in hand.
Good county fight-back
But an uplift in the Pembrokeshire fielding and the introduction of Marsh swung the game. Marsh clean bowled Blake for 49 and ended up with excellent figures of 5-16-7, including a well-deserved hat trick. So that West Glam finished on 135 all out in the 39 th over. The game provided some excellent learning for both sides, with the only down side for Pembrokeshire, being an injury to George Williams. The team is now starting to gel together, and learn the game of cricket with all performances improving. It was only fitting that the Pembrokeshire team voted Kurtis Marsh as the Man of the Match on his birthday weekend for his 41 runs and five wickets. Picture (from left to right):

Andrew wins Antur 'Player of the Month' Award Neyland skipper Andrew Miller is the deserved recipient of the inaugural 'Player of the Month' award from Antur Insurance, the main sponsor of the Pembroke County Cricket Club. Andrew has produced a string of superb performances with both bat and ball, plus a series of catches, especially off his own bowling, that has seen him stand head and shoulders above everyone else for consistency and results. He started off with 45 and 4 for 24 against Narberth, then 48 and 6 for 44 against Carew, plus 43 not out and 4 for 27 when Neyland played Llangwm. He showed that he was human with a duck against Hook but grabbed 3 for 16 and then finished May with 42 not out and 2 for 14 against St Ishmaels. As well as his undoubted qualities as a player, Andrew is an adept captain but, above all else, a gentleman of the sport, and everyone in cricket will be delighted by his being the first so honoured by Antur Insurance.
Our picture, supplied by Pembroke CCC, shows Andrew receiving his award from Phil James (Antur) and Maurice Cole, president of Pembroke CCC. |

National Village Cup Competition – Dyfed Zone Final
Skipper Cole helps Cresselly through
Cresselly 276 all out beat Carew (219 all out)
Umpires: John Williams & Alan Hansen
Scorers: David Richards & Mike Scourfield
Cresselly beat neighbours Carew in the Dyfed Zone Final of the National Village competition in a cracking contest where skipper Simon Cole led by example with top score and a four-wicket haul.
After sharing over 500 runs the previous day at Carew these two rivals separated by a mile of road moved back ‘up the hill’ to Cresselly for another run feast as Cresselly batted first and amassed 276 all out from their allotted 40 overs on a cracking pitch and lightning-fast outfield.
Cole is King
Leading the way was skipper Simon Cole with 81 runs, a superb innings which included six fours and three sixes, whilst opener Phil Williams returned to action after missing the previous day’s play with his work as a teacher, and scored a stylish 61 that contained 12 boundaries.
There were quick runs at the end as Adam Chandler blasted two sixes in his 35 and Ryan Lewis contributed a six and two fours in his cameo of 25 runs but Carew skipper Rob Scourfield grabbed three wickets in the final over to end up with 3 for 33. Young leg-spinner Ceri Brace returned figures of 3 for 72 whilst Tim Hicks (1 for 50), Rhys Davies (1 for 49) and Simon Wood (1 for 56) were the other Carew wicket-takers.
Poor start for Carew
Carew’s hopes of a good start foundered as Ian Sefton was removed first ball by Lyn Richards, who finished with 3 for 45, and Nick Scourfield departed for seven runs. But Tim Hicks gave Carew hope with a typically aggressive 97, including five sixes and three fours, before he was caught on the long-on boundary by Scott Arthur seeking another six that would have taken him into three figures. The bowler was Simon Cole and he finished with 4 for 12 as Richard Harris and Stefan Jenkins also picked up a wicket apiece. Phil Jones chipped in with 44 but Wayne Cannon was the only other Carew batsman in double figures as Cresselly eased through by 57 runs to earn a home tie in the next round against the winners of the Devon Group.

County Under 13s record second win
Mid Glamorgan (116 for 9) lost to Pembrokeshire (120 for 7)
Pembrokeshire under 13s travelled to play Mid Glamorgan at Mountain Ash and returned from their long journey with a second successive victory in their excellent start to the new season as they restricted the strong opposition to 116 for 9 and then reached 120 for 7 in 28.3 overs.
Good bowling
The toss was won by Mid Glamorgan and they elected to bat first but Lewis Hicks (Carew) took a wicket in the first over. The second change bowlers both took one wicket each as Gavin Campbell (Burton) bowled an economical spell of 1 for 3 and Josh Watson (Whitland) also bowled well.
Geraint Phillips (Whitland) bowled his best spell yet for the County by taking 2 for 21. When the spin twins came on Michael Carter (Llechryd) and George Wilkins (St Florence) both bowled well, both of whom took 2 wickets each. George Wilkins was on a hat-trick due to a good forward diving catch by keeper Benji Cromwell (Burton) but unfortunately the hat-trick ball was not to be a success. Pembrokeshire captain Jordan Howell (Narberth) chose 11 bowlers to bowl for Pembrokeshire and the final pair of Mid Glamorgan batsman put on over 30 runs and ended on 116 for 9 in 40 overs thanks to useful innings by Tom St David (20) and Tim Dalton (23), assisted by 19 from ‘Mr Extras’.
Batting fight-back
When Pembrokeshire batted they were soon in trouble losing Daniel Cole (Haverfordwest), Michael Carter and Lewis Hicks before the score was 13. John Curran (Llechryd) came to the crease to join Wilkins and this pair put on 45 for the fourth wicket before Wilkins was bowled for 11. This brought in Jordan Howell to bat with Curran, who mistimed a full toss to mid wicket and was caught for 3, which included six 4’s.
Pembrokeshire lost two more quick wickets and were 96 for 7 but Josh Watson came to the crease and he batted sensibly, as he and Howell saw Pembrokeshire home by 3 wickets as they ending on 120 for 7 in 28 overs, with Howell 27 not out (three 4s) and Watson 14 not out (three 4s). Coaches Richard Howell and Ian Carter chose Josh Watson as their man of the match for his bowling spell and batting at the end of the game.

National Village Cricket – Group 17 Semi-Final:
Carew crush struggling Tish
St Ishmaels (113 all out) lost to Carew (282 for 7)
Carew showed their full array of batting power to dismiss any real challenge from a St Ishmaels’ side in this one-sided match from the national Village Cup competition, scoring a massive 282 for 7 in 40 overs – and then shooting out Tish for 113 runs in only 28.4 overs.
Tish, although playing at home, were under pressure from the outset as Ian Sefton and Nick Scourfield got Carew up and running with respective scores of 40 and 41, followed by 39 from Brian Hall and 16 by Simon Wood. This was just the launch pad that Carew needed because Tim Hicks (56) and Phil Jones (44) sent the ball flying to all parts of the ground – and the Carew tally was boosted by a massive 41 from ‘Mr Extras’!
Daunting target for Tish
With such a daunting target Tish lost Stewart Kimpton for a duck, well caught by Hall off Hicks, but Daniel Flynn (27) and Jonathan Pawlett (28) added 54 for the second wicket before both fell in quick succession. Tish skipper Peter Bradshaw, batting in the unaccustomed No 6 berth, contributed 30 runs but with Hicks (2 for 34), Rhys Davies (1 for 31), Rob Scourfield (2 for 7), Simon Wood (3 for 21), Ceri Brace (1 for 6) and Ian Sefton (1 for 8) all getting amongst the wickets it allowed victory by a massive 169 runs and Tish sportingly wish their opponents every success in the competition.
Carew now play Cresselly or Bronwydd in the area final and on this form must start as hot favourites to progress even further.
Junior Cricket:
County under 11s start superbly
Carmarthenshire under 11s (136 for 8) lost to Pembrokeshire (137 for 3) The county’s talented under 11 team started their league season in style at South Llanelli with an excellent victory over their counterparts from Carmarthenshire by seven wickets. After losing the toss, they were asked to field first and Greg Thompson and George Williams bowled well to start, conceding 10 and 7 runs respectively from their 4 overs. Jacob Knox took the first wicket when he had Rhodri Evans well caught at mid-wicket by Jack Parkinson, Thomas Pritchard kept the pressure on, conceding only seven runs from his four overs, as Lewis Byng and Fred Somes batted well for Carmarthen.
Hard work for Pembs bowlers On a hot day, wickets were hard to come by and the rest of the Pembrokeshire bowlers toiled in the sun, although they managed to keep the run rate down. Kurtis Marsh bowled Somes for 25 runs and Byng reached an excellent 50 with 6 fours). This wicket injected some life into the Pembrokeshire team and with Geraint Jones picking up the key wicket of Byng (54), ending up with respectable figures of 2 – 11. An inspired second spell by Thompson, who picked up 4 wickets, all clean bowled, saw him end up with 4-18 off eight overs. Philip Llewellyn kept wicket well, with Elgan Roberts and Sean Webb working hard in the field as the Carmarthenshire innings closed on 136 – 8 in 40 overs.
Steady batting to start Pembrokeshire started solidly with Kurtis Marsh and Tomos Lewis, where runs were hard to come by with Liam Rogers, Lewis Byng, Ben Williams and Sam Jones all bowling tightly so that after 16 overs, Pembrokeshire were 35 – 0. A direct hit by Lewis Jones saw Tomos Lewis run out for 4 and Kurtis Marsh and Scott Jones were again tied down to start by some tight off- break bowling by Rhodri Evans. However, they ran well between the wickets and started to pick up the momentum. Kurtis cut the ball well and pulled to mid-wicket. Scott drove the ball and pulled powerfully. Kurtis remained unbeaten at the end with 65 not out (six fours) and Scott 57 (9 fours) was out looking for the winning run. A well-timed run chase finished off an excellent team effort with four boys - Jacob Knox, Jack Parkinson, Philip Llewellyn, Tomos Lewis and Thomas Pritchard all making their county debut and acquitting themselves very well.
The boys deservedly enjoyed their sausage and chips for tea at the Seaside Café and Corey Hill did an excellent job of scoring the book. Well done the county under 11 cricketers. 20th M ay 2009 County Under 13s start well Pembrokeshire's talented young under 13 players made a cracking start to the new season as they beat near neighbours Carmarthenshire by six wickets at St Florence. Welsh captain Daniel Jones led the Carmarthenshire batting with 42 runs , supported by 16 from Gareth Jones, but Pembrokeshire had the boost of early wickets from Jordan Howell (4 for 8 in eight overs) and Lewis Hicks (1 for 18), plus 1 for 8 by Josh Watson as keeper Benji Cromwell pouched a good catch so Carmarthenshire were restricted to 105 for 6 wickets. Daniel Cole and Michael Carter had double figures for the county but they looked a little shaky at 40 for 4 before John Curran showed his batting skills with an impressive 40 not out, ably assisted by Jordan Howell (22 not out), as Pembrokeshire finished with overs to spare on 106 for 4 wickets, to please coaches Richard Howell and Ian Carter.
