Match 1

Hall helps Carew go top

Carew (177 for 5) beat Narberth (174 all out)

Umpires: Alan Hansen & Dai Morris

Scorers: Michael Scourfield & Peter Hughes/Idwal Vincent

Brian Hall - top scored for CarewAn innings of 61 by Brian Hall helped Carew achieve victory over a battling Narberth side and move to the top of the table as their reward since Cresselly could only draw at Hook.

Hall was the rock on which Carew built a match-winning total after Narberth had been asked to bat first and mustered a more than useful tally of 174 all out from their 45 overs, with Tom Fox (30) and Wayne Howells (34) giving them a great start with a partnership of 65 before both fell to veteran bowler Darren Thomas, drafted back into first team action and showing he can still cut the mustard with a 3 for 34 spell alongside Rhys Davies (4 for 54) and Rob Scourfield (2 for 51).

Mike Scale (17) and Marc Hughes (23) advanced the Narberth score to a healthy 110 for 2 but although there were double figures from Aaron Keane, Ian Hughes and Ben Quartermaine it needed 22 runs from ‘Mr Extras’ to help them reach their final scoreline.

Ian Hughes bowled well for Narberth to shift the Carew openers Ian Sefton (23) and Nick Scourfield (11) but hall had eight boundaries as he sailed past 50 alongside Wayne Cannon (30) before both were shifted by Ben Quartermaine, whose brother Kyle grabbed the only other Carew wicket as Martin Scourfield departed for a duck.

But Phil Jones (19 not out) and skipper Rob Scourfield (13 not out) saw Carew to maximum points with an over to spare – and an eight-point advantage over Cresselly in the race for the silverware.

**Narberth welcomed back Idwal Vincent to scoring the second innings after Peter Hughes had scored the first half of the match. Idwal has been indisposed for a short while and it was nice to see him back in action.

Joseph Kiff launches a big six for Llangwm Match 2

Llangwm collapse to Davies

Llangwm (148 all out) lost to Neyland (151 for 3)

Umpires: Tony Scourfield & Peter Perry

Scorer: John Laugharne (Neyland)

An inspired spell of off-spin bowling by Phil Davies saw Llangwm collapse from 132 for 4 to 148 all out at Pill Parks before Neyland sped to victory via excellent innings from Scott John and skipper Andrew Miller.

Scott John - match winning Neyland inningsLlangwm had lost main run-getter Will Beresford early to a good Patrick Bellerby catch off Ashley Sutton’s bowling but Joseph Kiff (21), Gary Phillips (28) and Luke Brock (23) steadied things for Llangwm and each struck a six in the process.

Then Andrew Harries increased the tempo as he blitzed 40 runs that included five sixes, all of them off Andrew Miller before Miller gained a measure of revenge by bowling Harries. Miller also removed Matthew Kiff and Rhys Morgan to end with respectable figures of 3 for 48 but it was Davies who did the major damage after Llangwm looked strong on 132 for 4 before he picked up 5 for 15 in 12 overs as he mesmerised the home batsmen so that only Jonathan Twigg (11 not out) reached double figures as they were shot out for 148 runs.

Neyland also lost an early wicket as Paul Murray managed only a single but Scott John and Andrew Miller added 124 runs together, both playing some cracking shots and  John still there at the finish with seven fours and two sixes in his 65 not out. Miller had seven boundaries in his 53 before he was bowled by Luke Brock, who followed up next ball with a second scalp as Jeremy Charles edged a good ball into Beresford’s gloves for a ‘golden duck’. But Gregg Miller (13 not out) joined John in taking Neyland to a seven-wicket victory in only 38 overs, and maximum bonus points into the bargain.

Match 3

Hook last pair hold on for draw

Hook (151 for 9) drew with Cresselly (219 for 9)

Umpires: Dave Brandon & Glyn Pawlett

Scorers: Joy James & Lois Howlett-Dyer/Dave Richards

Andrew Harris plays a good shot for Cresselly at HookHook’s last-wicket pairing of Tom Blaxland and Matthew Holder survived almost seven overs to deny Cresselly victory after the visitors had amassed 219 for 9 and Hook had looked comfortable on 110 for 2 but lost five wickets in adding a further two runs.

In doing so they denied Cresselly the chance to remain in top spot but could only manage one batting bonus point of their own and are now only two points ahead of Whitland near the foot of the table.

Put in to bat, Cresselly made a slow start but gradually increased their impetus Adam Chandler (74) and Julian Arthur (32) who added 74 for the fourth wicket as Chandler struck seven fours and four sixes, whilst Arthur rapped a four and two big sixes in support. There were cameos from Simon Cole (20), Damian Arthur (21) and Neilson Cole (22) so that although Ross Martin claimed 4 for 39 alongside Tom Blaxland’s 4 for 54, Cresselly totalled a huge 219 for 9 from their allotted 45 overs.

When Hook batted, Ben Field (25), and Martin Rees (27) joined Ross Martin, three fours and three sixes in his excellent 46, but from then on only old-stagers Brennan Lay and Andrew Thomas could muster double figures as Cresselly got on top when Lyn Richards bowled on over where he shifted Mick Haltam and Jack Britton – and Brennan Martin was run out. Stefan Jenkins (2 for 33) joined skipper Cole (2 for 4) in keeping on the pressure in search of victory for Cresselly but the Hook tail-enders held firm to secure the draw.

Match 4

Whitland spring major surprise

Whitland (167 for 5) beat Haverfordwest (165 for 8)

Umpires: Rob Bellerby & Barry Wood

Scorers: Janice Webb & Jayne Cole

Edward John - excellent 63 for WhitlandWhitland sprang what is the major surprise of the season so far as they deservedly beat current champions Haverfordwest to help themselves towards safety at the other end of the table whilst severely denting The Town’s hopes of retaining the silverware.

Put in to bat, Haverfordwest made very slow progress at the start as they lost key run-makers Danny Potter and Karl Rhead cheaply to Carl Smith and Mark Lee respectively. Richard James (four fours in his 30), Danny Field (17) and Adam Raymond (24, including three fours) steadied the ship before Dai Davies (35) and acting skipper Phil Kirkby (23 not out) shared six boundaries in guiding The Town towards their 165 for 8.

Matthew Davies was the pick of the Whitland bowlers with 4 for 50, including the wicket of Adam Davies (15) from the final delivery of the innings to earn an extra bonus point, with a wicket apiece for Iestyn Scourfield and Paul Webb.

Whitland lost Dai Lee early to Kirkby and although Paul Davies and Edward John had to settle things down for a while they gradually raised the tempo in a stand of 106 which allowed Whitland to launch their challenge for victory. Davies had four boundaries in his rock-solid 56 before he was caught by Rhead off Clive Tucker and John played some classy shots in his 63, which included four fours and a six, before he was bowled by Kirkby.

Kevin Pearce and Matthew Davies came and went but Steve Fraser was there at the end with 15 not out alongside Scott Newton and Whitland earned 29 points as their reward, allowing them to close the gap on Hook near the foot of the table, to only two points.

Match 5

Williams wins it for Tish

Lawrenny (83 all out) lost to St Ishmaels (134 for 9)

Umpires: John Williams & Tony Waldeis

Scorers: Malcolm Thomas & Wendy Bradshaw

Andrew Williams - 7 for 15 in Tish winAndrew Williams has been lightly used as a bowler by St Ishmaels this season but he showed that he can still turn his arm over with a vengeance as he grabbed 7 for 15 in 11.3 overs (6 maidens) to help his team to a 51 run victory.

Such a success seemed unlikely earlier in the match as only James Salter and Peter Bradshaw, with 28 apiece, plus a speedy 22, including five fours, from Johnny Pawlett looked comfortable amongst the Tish batsmen as Steve Rees (3 for 21) and Ben Cole (3 for 29) did the damage, ably assisted by Richard Prout (2 for 44) and Steve Lewis (1 for 6).

Bradshaw and Salter had shared a third wicket partnership of 40 but from there on only second team skipper Robbie Thomas (17 not out) and his side-kick Lenny Rees (12) made sure that Tish limped to 134 for 9, not a daunting total but a reasonable one in the conditions.

It suddenly assumed mountainous proportions as Pawlett trapped Brad Jenkins for only four runs and skipper Hugh Griffiths suffered the same fate to Salter to leave Lawrenny looking shaky on 12 for 2. Andrew Cole (23) and Steve Lewis (26) advanced the score to 52 but then Williams stepped up as first-change bowler and exerted his considerable influence in bowling them both and Ian Jenkins was the only other Lawrenny batsman to manage double figures.

Williams had five batsmen clean bowled as a measure of his accuracy and his seven-wicket haul is the best in the division this season, with spin bowler Danny Flynn claiming the other scalp to sent Tish to a welcome win.
