Match 1 - Carew versus Lawrenny

Carew pace man Tim Hicks bowls to Lawrenny's James Buckle. Carew recover

from slow start

Carew (178 for 6)
beat
Lawrenny (177 for 7)

Umpires: Rob Bellerby & Dave Loosmore

Scorers: Mike Scourfield & Malcolm Thomas

Carew secured a four wicket win over neighbours Lawrenny with three balls to spare in an absorbing clash where Carew made a good start with the ball but the visitors bounced back – and then Carew built on a quiet start which saw them at 37 for 0 after 20 overs.

Rhys Davies and Tim Hicks made early inroads in the Carew batting and Simon Woods shifted a key run-gatherer in Steve Lewis to leave Lawrenny a little shaky at 46 for 4 before James Buckle and Ian Jenkins knuckled down in a fight back which saw them share 73 runs.

Buckle had four boundaries in his 38 and Jenkins showed what an asset he is with five fours and two sixes in his 52 before he was caught by Hicks off Rob Scourfield’s bowling. A late flurry of runs by Hugh Griffiths and Rob Williams, who was unbeaten on 27 at the close, took Lawrenny to a respectable 177 for 7 in view of their early plight.

Williams then joined forces with Richard Prout in applying a tweezer hold on Brian Hall and Nick Scourfield before Prout removed Hall and Williams shifted Wayne Cannon cheaply. Simon Wood and Tim Hicks failed to make their usual impact but Carew found the partnership they needed as Nick Scourfield moved to yet another patient half century and Phil Jones blitzed five fours and a six in his unbeaten 46 made from only 38 deliveries.

Martin Scourfield and Rhys Davies also chipped in with late runs so that Carew achieved a welcome win in the final over that moves them back into second spot in the table.

Match 2 - Cresselly versus Narberth

Battling draw for Narberth

Adam Chandler scored 77 for CressellyNarberth (182 for 7)
drew with
Cresselly (204 for 7)

Trefor Evans & John Austin

Scorers: Peter Hughes & Lois Howlett-Dyer

Narberth and Cresselly fought out a high-scoring draw at the Lewis Lloyd ground as the visitors amassed 204 for 7 and Narberth showed their battling qualities with 182 for 7 in response.

Leading the way for Cresselly were opener Phil Williams (eight fours in his 40 runs) and Adam Chandler, with seven fours and five sixes in his 77 runs made from only 92 balls before he was bowled by Ian Hughes. Simon Cole chipped in with 24 but became one of Tom Fox’s four victims and Hughes also bowled well for his 2 for 44 analysis.

Narberth made a strong start in reply as skipper Ritchie Adams (35) and Mike Scale (32) shared an opening stand of 62 before Scale was run out and Adams fell to the wily slow stuff of Ryan Lewis. Tom Fox departed for a duck to Richard Harris, who also removed the in-form Wayne Howells, but Mark Hughes showed his ability with 44 runs alongside Aaron Keane’s 31 and although Simon Cole claimed three wickets from his off- spinners, Narberth held on well to claim maximum draw points.

Match 3 - Haverfordwest versus Hook

Brennan Lay (Hook) plays a sweep shot in his 43 runs against HwestKarl kills off Hook hopes

Haverfordwest (110 for 3)
beat
Hook (106 all out)

Umpires: Hilliard Davies & Dai Morris

Scorers: Jayne Cole and Joy James

A powerful undefeated 62 by Karl Rhead helped Haverfordwest retain top spot with a seven wicket success over basement battlers Hook, who showed all their batting frailties as they limped from 41 without loss to 106 all out after being invited to bat first by Town skipper Huw Scriven.

It was never going to be enough, despite the absence through injury of Haverfordwest’s openers Danny Potter and Richard James through injury, and Rhead stroked ten fours and a six as he saw his team home and faced just 74 balls in the process as Steve Phillips supported with 29 before he became one of Ben Field’s two victims.

Jamie Phelps (19) and Field (four boundaries in his 24) batted well for Hook but when they fell to Phil Kirkby as part of his 3 for 13 analysis in 12 miserly overs it was left to gritty No 5 batsman Brennan lay to keep them moving towards three figures before he was out with the score on 106 and his personal contribution an excellent 43 which included five fours and a six.

Hook hopes were raised as Ross martin trapped Adam Raymond lbw for a duck but Rhead and Phillips advanced the score to 70 before Phillips departed – but Rhead claimed his second successive half century since switching to opener and The Town retained top spot with a comfortable win.

Match 4 - Llangwm versus Whitland

Will Beresford - superb 111 for Llangwm openerWhitland last pair

secures the draw

Whitland (156 for 9)
drew with
Llangwm (179 for 7)

Umpires: Dave Brandon & Alan Hansen

Scorers: Janice Webb & Janice Brick

Whitland’s last pair of Paul Webb and Carl Smith survived the final over of their home match with Llangwm to secure full draw points in a match where fortunes certainly ebbed and flowed.

The principal performer when Llangwm were asked to bat first was Will Beresford, the stylish left hander striking 12 fours and four big sixes in his 111 as he carried his bat throughout the innings. Gary Phillips was the main support with 21 runs as home skipper Mark Lee led his bowling attack with a 3 for 34 spell, with a wicket apiece from Matthew Davies, Iestyn Scourfield, Dave Lee and Paul Webb.

Whitland were soon deep in trouble as Chris Inward shifted four of the top Whitland batting line-up for a combined total of just ten runs as Ed John (24) tried hard to steady the ship alongside Steve Fraser (16) before Andrew Harries also bowled well for Llangwm in his 3 for 38 spell.

But Whitland found an unlikely partnership as teenager Iestyn Scourfield lashed ten fours in an aggressive 60 and Paul Webb, batting in the unusually low position of No 10 kept plugging away. Webb was joined by Carl Smith for the final over and Whitland successfully negotiated it to prevent Llangwm winning – but it was a real battle to do so!

Match 5 - Neyland versus St Ishmaels

Nick Kooman - runs and a wicket in Neyland winMakeshift Tish

pay the price

Neyland (133 for 2)
beat
St Ishmaels (131 all out)

Umpires: Peter Perry & Dennis Chiffi

Scorers: John Laugharne & Wendy Bradshaw

St Ishmaels travelled to Neyland minus several key players and paid the inevitable price as the home side were on top throughout and were good value for victory.

It was left to Steve Hartley, who is better known as a goalkeeper, to score 25 (two sixes) alongside youngster Phil Cockburn (31), plus 18 apiece from Andrew Williams and Johnny Pawlett (all from three sixes!) as Tish managed to reach 131 all out in 39.2 overs as Neyland opening bowlers Patrick hannon and Henry Durrant returned respective figures of 3 for 32 and 3 for 27, ably assisted by two wickets from skipper Andrew Miller.

Neyland made a solid start after tea via Scott John (15) and Paul Murray (23) before Pawlett removed them both – but from 59 for 2 there was only going to be one winner as Miller rapped four boundaries in his 42 not out and Nick Kooman contributed 33 not out (five fours) in a deserved win for Neyland.
