Match 1 - Whitland versus Lawrenny

James Buckle - runs and wickets for LawrennyLawrenny bounce back

to winning ways

Lawrenny (138 for 3)
beat (Whitland 137 for 9)

Umpires: Tony Scourfield & Walter Dash

Scorer: Malcolm Thomas (Lawrenny)

Lawrenny bounced back to winning ways as they eased their way to a seven wicket verdict over a Whitland side which had too few batsmen able to stay for an extended period against accurate bowling.

Edward John (two fours in 17), Johnny Thomas (three fours in 19) and Kevin Pearce (two fours in 28) all made useful starts but it was left to in-form skipper Mark Lee to steer them to 137 for 9 with a late 34 not out that included a big six. Alistair Edwards marked his debut for Lawrenny with a 3 for 37 haul and had useful support from Rob Williams (2 for 28), James Buckle (2 for 38) and Ian Jenkins (1 for 34).

Mark Lee took an early wicket for Whitland as he had in-form Lawrenny opener Andrew Cole well caught by Ed John but Brad Jenkins (3) and James Buckle (41) shared 11 boundaries and a stand of 62 before they were separated. It provided just the launch-pad that Barry Phillips and Steve Lewis like and they both remained unbeaten with 25 and 32 respectively to steer Lawrenny to a big win with more than six overs still to spare.

Match 2 - Cresselly versus St Ishmaels

Julian Arthur - big 60 for CressellyTish hold on for draw

St Ishmaels (155 for 8)
drew with Cresselly (187 for 5)

Umpires: Les Hastings & Arthur Brady

Scorers: Wendy Bradshaw & David Richards

Matches between St Ishmaels and Cresselly are traditionally hard fought and this one was no exception as Cresselly were asked to bat first and built a big score of 187 for 5 around a sparky middle-order innings of 60 by Julian Arthur, who shared a productive partnership of 107 with Adam Chandler.

Phil Williams had opened with 29 but run-gatherers James Venables and Simon Cole both departed for nine runs each as Tish fielders supported their bowlers well. Chandler came in at No 4 to score 51 not out (four fours and a six) and Arthur showed what an impact player he is with five fours and three big sixes before he fell in the late run chase to Jonathan Pawlett.

Tish made a steady, if slow start through Peter Bradshaw (22) and Andrew Williams (39), which was followed by steady scores from Stewart Kimpton, Pawlett and Andrew palmer but no-one was able to build an innings of substance as Chandler and Arthur did – and with Ryan Lewis wheeling his slow stuff to claim 5 for 44 the homesters had to settle for the draw well short of their target.

Match 3 - Neyland versus Hook

Scott John - runs and wickets for NeylandScott seals Neyland win

Hook (136 all out)
lost to Neyland (148 for 9)

Umpires: Huw Davies & Steve Blowes

Scorers: Joy James & John Laugharne

A sterling all-round performance by Scott John was the keynote feature of Neyland’s win at Hook as he top scored with 58 in Neyland’s 148 for 9 score and then grabbed 4 for 21 to help reduce Hook to 136 all out after a good start gave them hope of a first win of the campaign.

Scott John and Paul Murray (23) gave Neyland a strong start after they elected to bat first but no-one else ever looked as settled after Matthew Holder began his spell for Hook and claimed 6 for 25. Holder had Murray caught by Ross Martin and also removed John with the assistance of a Keith James’ catch after John had hit four fours and a six as he faced 132 balls and showed his concentration to the full. Andrew Thomas and Ross Martin also bowled decent spells for Hook but a target of 148 for victory was a challenge for Hook.

Patrick Hannon struck two blows by shifting Martin Rees and Mick Haltam but sandwiched in between these wickets was a stand of 71 for the second wicket by Jamie Phelps (four fours in his 34) and Ross Martin, who plundered six fours and two big sixes in an excellent 54 before he gave a return catch to Neyland captain Andrew Miller.

It was the beginning of the end for Hook because Miller grabbed 3 for 16 and Scott John returned figures of 4 for 21 to bowl out Hook a tantalising 13 runs short of victory and leave them reflecting on what might have been had not Neyland showed some grit to fight back well.

Match 4 - Narberth versus Llangwm

Matthew Johns - match winning bowling for Narberth‘Johnno’ jolts Llangwm

with five-wicket haul

Llangwm (107 all out)
lost to Narberth (166 for 9)

Umpires: Richard Merriman & Glyn Pawlett

Scorer: Peter Hughes (Narberth)

A five-wicket haul by Matthew Johns helped Narberth gain a good win at Pill Parks over a Llangwm side which was unable to cope with his spin bowling and paid the price as they lost by 59 runs after having their chances to make a real impact.

Narberth started badly as they lost three early wickets but their middle order of Mike Scale (27), Wayne Howells (five fours in his 41), Kyle Quartermaine (30) and Ben Quartermaine (three sixes in a swift 24) took them to a useful final tally of 166 for 9. Richard Brock was the best Llangwm bowler with 3 for 44 whilst Chris Inward (2 for 26) and Andrew Brock (2 for 44) gave good support.

Teenage opener Joseph Kiff belied his years with top score of 35 when Llangwm batted and there were double figures from Ian Phillips, Jonathan Twigg and Andrew Harries but all got out just when they seemed to have settled. The wickets began to tumble when Johns was joined by left-arm paceman Ian Hughes (2 for 14 in eight overs) and Johns finished with 5 for 5 in six overs to help Narberth secure a welcome maximum points for their efforts.

Match 5 - Carew versus Haverfordwest

Nick Scourfield drives Clive Tucker for fourTown takes vital victory

Carew (185 for 6)
lost to Haverfordwest (189 for 3)

Umpires: John Williams & Dennis Chiffi

Scorers: Mike Scourfield & Jayne Cole

Haverfordwest won the top of the table clash at Carew as the home side totalled 185 for 6 but couldn’t contain The Town’s powerful batting line-up, superbly led by Karl Rhead, as they lost only three wickets in winning from only 38.2 overs.

Nick Scourfield was again ‘Mr Reliable’ for Carew as he top scored with 94 before he was well caught near the boundary by Mikey Jones off Adam James having faced 135 balls and stroking eight fours and two sixes, making Haverfordwest pay for dropping him from a simple chance when he had reached 20. Brian Hall (33) and Phil Jones (24 not out) provided the bulk of the support as Josh Wilment and Phil Kirkby grabbed two wickets apiece in the Haverfordwest attack.

Danny Potter (15) and Karl Rhead gave The Town a solid start in an opening stand of 50 before Potter was adjudged lbw to Rob Scourfield – but Steve Phillips (32) and Rhead advanced the score to 134 before Phillips (five fours in his 32) was given out lbw to Rhys Davies, who followed up five runs later by bowling Rhead, who struck four lovely sixes and four fours en route to his 67.

Mikey Jones looked nervous on his seasonal debut for The Town’s first team but the teenager showed what a good striker of the ball he is with 45 not out, including three sixes and two fours, with Dai Davies joining him on the run-in to victory that allowed Haverfordwest to leap-frog over the opposition at the head of the table.
