Match 1 - Carew versus Narberth

Wayne Howells - gritty knock for NarberthRuns at a premium at Lewis Lloyd

Narberth (74 for 6)
drew with
Carew (104 for 9)

Umpires:
Dave Brandon & Dai Morris

Scorers:
Idwal Vincent & Mike Scourfield

Runs were certainly at a premium on a dampish Lewis Lloyd ground as the powerful Carew batting line-up was reduced to only 104 for 9 in their 45 overs and Narberth found it even more difficult to score runs.

They were limited to 74 for 6 as the Carew bowlers bowled no fewer than 16 maidens and skipper Rob Scourfield certainly led by example with 2 for 9 in 12 accurate overs where Narberth found it impossible to get any momentum.

Ian Sefton and Nick Scourfield added a few runs early on but after the former batsmen left for 16, removed by Narberth’s promising new all-rounder Tom Fox, it was hard going for Carew as Kyle Quartermaine claimed 3 for 24 and brother Ben (1 for 23) and Ian Hughes (1 for 19) gave support, with Fox looking a good player with his 3 for 35. Only Carew’s opening batsman Nick Scourfield stayed long as he faced 136 balls before he gave a caught and bowled chance to Ben Quartermaine with 39 runs to his name.

But Narberth’s hopes of a surprise win were soon looking unlikely as Rhys Davies steamed in to shift openers Marc Hughes and Richard Adams, Tim Hicks shifted Fox and Mike Scale was finally removed for ten runs after he had battled his way through 49 deliveries.

Rob Scourfield applied a tourniquet to the run rate and at 41 for 6 it was just a matter of could Narberth survive.

And survive they did as their two most experienced campaigners came together, with Wayne Howells grafting his way to 30 not out from 122 balls (three fours) and Matthew Johns supporting on 17 not out as Narberth limped to 74 for 6 and had to settle for a ‘losing draw’.

Match 2 - Lawrenny versus St Ishmaels

Andrew Williams - excellent innings in Tish's win against LawrennyRuns galore as Tish triumph

St Ishmaels (167 for 2)
beat
Lawrenny (166 for 5)

Umpires:
Alan Hansen & Rob Bellerby

Scorers:
Wendy Bradshaw & Malcolm Thomas

There were runs galore at St Ishmaels as the home side, led by experienced batsman Andrew Williams, chased down Lawrenny’s decent score with such determination that they eased home with two overs and eight wickets still in hand.

Williams shared an opening stand of  68 with skipper Peter Bradshaw, whose 36 contained a single boundary but helped establish the platform for such a run chase and Williams contributed a stylish 61 (four fours) before he became James Buckle’s second victim with the score on 121.

But there were no further alarms for Tish as Stewart Kimpton chipped in with 22 not out and Johnny Pawlett looked back to something like his best form with three fours and a big six en route to an unbeaten 39.

Lawrenny had also made a good start via Andrew Cole (16) and Brad Jenkins (31, including a six) which was continued by James Buckle (19) and Steve Lewis (20) before Ian Jenkins showed that anything son Brad could do he could do better with a crafted 50 not out that contained three fours and two sixes.

Stewart Kimpton was the pick of the Tish bowlers with 3 for 26 alongside 2 for 37 from off-spinner Danny Flynn, the Aussie all-rounder who also batted well as Tish picked up welcome points for their good performance.

Match 3 - Hook versus Cresselly

Stefan Jenkins - five wicket haul for CressellyCresselly cruise to easy win

Cresselly (124 for 2)
beat
Hook (123 all out)

Umpires:
Barry Wood & Walter Dash

Scorers:
Lois Howlett-Dyer & Joy James

Cresselly cruised to a comfortable home win over Hook as they limited the visitors to 123 all out and then batted sensibly to ease through by eight wickets with ample overs to spare.

Hook were in trouble from the outset as they lost Jamie Phelps and Matthew Holder for ducks to Stefan Jenkins, who led the Cresselly attack with a 5 for 37 haul as only Ross Martin, Tom Blaxland and Brennan Lay managed double figures in support of Mick Haltam and Martin Rees, who both scored 24, the latter not out at the end, Lyn Richards claimed 2 for 20 in support of Jenkins, with a scalp each for spinners Ryan Lewis and James Venables.

Venables then joined Phil Williams in an opening stand of 61 before Venables was well caught by Keith James off the bowling of Andrew Thomas. Williams departed on 101 with 34 runs to his credit (five fours) and it was left to skipper Simon Cole (34 in 25 balls) to blitz four fours and two sixes before he became Tom Blaxland’s first wicket in division one and Adam Chandler was joined by Damian Arthur in seeing Cresselly home from 29.1 overs.

Match 4 - Haverfordwest versus Whitland

He's out! Whitland's batsman Dai Lee edges a drive from Adam James to Haverfordwest keeper Huw Scriven.Skipper Lee holds Town up

Haverfordwest (199 for 7)
drew with
Whitland (127 for 8)

Umpires:
Steve Blowes & Peter Perry

Scorers:
Jayne Cole & Janice Webb

Skipper Mark Lee showed what an asset his experience his all-round play is for Whitland as he bowled well and then held up Haverfordwest’s hopes of maximum points with a gritty 29 not out at the finish.

Town wicket keeper Huw Scriven appeals for lbwLee claimed 3 for 37 as The Town amassed a challenging 199 for 7 after openers Danny Potter (37) and Richard James (27) continued their good start to the season in a partnership of 68 before James was bowled by wily off-spinner Paul Webb and Potter was beautifully stumped down the leg side by Steve Fraser off Mark Lee’s bowling.

Haverfordwest’s strong batting line-up was shown, however, when Dai Davies and Phil Kirkby came in at 5 and 6 to build a century stand before both went in the late chase for runs. Davies was also stumped by Fraser with five fours and a six in his 60 whilst Kirkby struck three sixes and two fours before he was dismissed for 47.

Whitland needed a good start if they were to chase down such a score but Adam James grabbed wickets regularly for The Town as he removed the first four Whitland batsmen and added a fifth as Huw Scriven took three good catches behind the stumps. Paul Webb batted solidly for his 20 before he became one of Kirkby’s two victims but Mark Lee stood strong – although The Town claimed a welcome extra point from the last ball of the match when Scott Newton was run out seeking a single that would have given his side a single bonus point.

Match 5 - Llangwm versus Neyland

Nerve-wracking finish as Llangwm battle back

Andrew Miller - another superb all-round display by Neyland skipperNeyland (89 for 9)
drew with
Llangwm (108 for 8)

Umpires:
Dave Loosmore & Tony Waldeis

Scorers:
John Laugharne & Janice Brick

Fortunes certainly ebbed and flowed at the Athletic Ground before a halt was finally called with Neyland’s last pair of Andrew Miller and Phil Davies holding out for six overs to deny Llangwm a victory that would have seemed unlikely at tea.

Llangwm had made a slow start with only 30 runs from 20 overs, with Patrick Hannon claiming 1 for 11 in 12 typically miserly overs as Will Beresford and talented youngster Joseph Kiff scored 21 runs apiece. Phil Davies also bowled well in his 12 overs of off-spin to claim 2 for 23 alongside skipper Andrew Miller, who grabbed a 4 for 27 haul, and it was only battling knocks from Chris Inward (24) and Jonathan Twigg (20) that helped Llangwm to their final tally.

Neyland struggled after tea even more than Llangwm had as Chris Inward knocked over Ashley Sutton, Scott John, Greg Miller and Paul Murray in an impressive opening spell whilst Andrew Brock dismissed Nick Kooman to leave Neyland at a parlous 31 for 5.

Andrew and Richard Brock continued to worry all the Neyland batting line-up but in-form skipper Miller survived one difficult chance to stay strong and his 43 not out contained six fours as he punished anything loose to continue his superb form with bat and ball.

Andrew Slark showed that he is anything but a No 11 batsman as he stayed with his captain to deny Llangwm – and in the final analysis perhaps a draw was the fairest result of this absorbing clash.
