Keegan Summers with proud dad SteveKeegan catchesthe eye as a Goodwick goal-grabber

One would imagine that with a name like Keegan Summers the owner might be a good footballer, perhaps as a goal scorer – and that is just the case because at just 12 years of age this 12 year old from Goodwick is already making waves since this season he has already scored an amazing 47 goals in only 16 matches!
It is all the more of an achievement since Keegan  wasn’t really interested a few years ago and started when he was nine years old (quite late these days!) at Clarbeston Road. He did quite well but it was when he returned to Goodwick and played for their team, coached by Dai Hayes and Simon Lawrence, that he suddenly grew in confidence, started to look co-ordinated and began banging in the goals.

Superb season so far

He had a good campaign last year but it has paled into insignificance since this season has seen him really develop and his best tally so far was a six-goal haul against Solva in a 7-0 win. He’s had his share of four-goal games and a few hat-tricks as he uses his speed, natural nose for an opening and excellent first touch to such good effect that he already resembles dad Steve on the pitch – quite a compliment since Steve was one of the best strikers to come out of Pembrokeshire in his era. Steve regularly watches Keegan’s team play and helps out Dai and Tim when he’s needed, with Keegan’s mum Julie as another great supporter, and granddad Neil as a former footballer who gives great encouragement. Goodwick United’s first team manager Bernie Armstrong often referees their games and he is another whom Keegan looks up to and from whom he takes advice.

Keegan Summers shows his ball skillsAcademy and school success

Keegan’s goal-scoring exploits attracted the attention of Angie Nichols at the Haverfordwest Academy and he has played twice for the Bluebirds’ Juniors so far. He scored on debut in a 3-3 draw against Swansea and also played a very good Llanelli team where he learned a great deal against bigger opponents.
But his greatest triumph was as part of the Fishguard Junior School team which last season not only won the Urdd Competition in Pembrokeshire but went on to win the national final at Aberystwyth, no mean feat when one considers how small the school is compared to some of their opponents. They beat a very strong Tenby team by 1-0 to qualify for Aberystwyth and on a very hot Sunday won their group and then went on to win their semi-final by 2-0 and repeated the same scoreline in the final to scoop the silverware. Stefan Hayes was another player who performed well throughout and Keegan scored four goals in all, including a goal in each of their last two vital matches.

Other sports for a Red Devils’ fan

Keegan now attends Fishguard Comprehensive and has played on the wing for the year seven team, using his turn of speed to good effect. He also enjoyed cricket in his junior school and was victor ludorum in the athletics, doing well in all the sprint events. But it is football that is his favourite and like dad he is an avid supporter of Manchester United, with Ronaldo as his favourite player, closely followed by Ryan Giggs, of course. He had a real treat when he went with Steve and Neil to watch United in the European Cup semi-final against AC Milan at Old Trafford, was captivated by the amazing atmosphere and was thrilled when Wayne Rooney scored the vital third goal in a 3-2 success.

Great Goodwick supporter

But he also likes to go with dad to watch Goodwick United first team play although he spends most of the team with the other local lads kicking a ball with their coats as the goals. Like the rest he goes home covered in mud but Steve says that such practice can only help Keegan’s development.

So what of the future for someone who can score goals so readily? At the moment he just loves to play football and that is perhaps how it should be at such a tender age. As he grows in size, however, he could be an even bigger threat to opposing defences and Pembrokeshiresport.co.uk is very confident that we will hear a lot more about Keegan Summers in the future of he can maintain his current rate of progress in the game.
