Martin’s making his name
in amateur boxing
Martin Evans is a 13 year old Greenhill School pupil who is already a current Welsh Amateur Boxing Association champion and is again in the finals this year as reward for his dedication at Merlins Bridge Amateur Boxing Club.
He travels from his home in Kilgetty four nights a week for regular training sessions under the watchful eye of coach Graham Brockway, who says of Martin.
“I couldn’t have a better prospect in terms of commitment and hard work in the gym which allows him to do well in the ring. He is also a very skilful young boxer and is ever-ready to listen to advice about how he can improve his performance.”
Martin also runs up to three miles on the other three nights of the week and enjoys other sports like football, where he plays in the defence for a Carew junior team run by Barry Evans.
Family involvement and a will to win
Boxing is very much part of the Evans’ family’s interest because older brother Luke is also a Welsh champion and dad Ellis is Graham’s assistant trainer in the Merlins Bridge gym. Ellis is always there wherever Martin boxes and is a great supporter, as is the rest of the family.
When Martin set out in boxing as a raw novice he showed his potential by winning all of his first four bouts before suffering a couple of narrow defeats against more experienced opponents – but as coach Graham says,
“This is part of the learning proves and has done ham no harm whatsoever – in fact it will make him a better boxer and more determined than ever to win.”
High hopes for Martin
Martin won the 46kg class last year and after getting through this season’s preliminary contests will travel to Swansea again on March 16th to match his boxing skills against Gethin Kenny, of Gwynfi, in his attempt at becoming a double Welsh champ.
There’s one thing for sure and that is the fact that Martin will give 100% as he always does because as well as having skills aplenty he is also a bonny battler who will keep going until the final bell.
“Everyone in the club is hoping that Martin can win his second title,” says Graham Brockway “because he deserves it. He is an example to young sports players with regard to showing real dedication and I expect great things of him in the next few years.”
