Keith keeps his horses in fine fettle
Racehorse trainer Keith Goldsworthy and his staff from Yerbeston, had a very busy Christmas period with several horses performing at various venues throughout the country.
On 18th December, ‘Cresswell Willow’, owned by the well-known South Pembrokeshire farmer Bruce McKay, was the impressive 14 to 1 winner of a three-mile handicap chase at Ludlow. ‘Hills of Aran’ ran in the prodigious Grade 1 Long Walk Hurdle at Ascot but failed to be placed. However, he made an encouraging steeple-chasing debut when fourth at Chepstow's Welsh Grand national meeting in a Beginners’ 'Chase.
On Boxing Day, ‘Hold Em’, ridden by top jockey A.P.McCoy, finished a very creditable third at Kempton Park in the Grade 1 Feltham Novice 'Chase, despite being badly hampered by a falling horse when travelling very well. He celebrated his seventh birthday at Cheltenham on New Year's Day when finishing third in the feature handicap race despite not liking the sticky ground. On this occasion he was ridden by the up-and-coming 17 year old claiming jockey Rhys Flint from Cowbridge.
And finally, the lightly raced seven year old, ‘Shenanigan’ was a most impressive 8 to 1 winner at Taunton on 30th December, comfortably beating Alan King's odds-on favourite ‘Over Sixty’. This horse, along with several other of the stable’s horses, is certainly one to follow in 2009.
Another busy month awaits Keith Goldsworthy though the weather will have to get milder if it is to allow him to maintain his recent run of excellent form with his quality string of horses.
