Jack shows his golfing prowess
Jack Harries is a very promising young golfer who is making a name for himself in the county and further afield as this talented young player from the south of the county who is currently the junior captain at South Pembs Golf Club and has been the winner of a range of local competitions.
That he should be involved in sport was perhaps inevitable since his dad Spencer was a very talented cricketing all-rounder, played Welsh League centre half for Pembroke Borough and is a very useful golfer himself. His mum Sue hails from the equally talented Jones family of Saundersfoot, where his late granddad Cliff was a well-known sporting all-rounder and so is his uncle Phil.
Football and rugby player
Jack is the captain of Hundleton under 13s football team, where he has been involved for four years, and plays at centre back and had ‘Players’ Player of the Year’ for the club’s under 12 team in 2007/08.
He also plays rugby for Pembroke under 13’s at full back (but can play anywhere in the back division) where he is current vice captain. He has played at Crickmarren since the age of eight and really enjoys watching all other sports. His sporting heroes are Steven Gerrard (Liverpool FC) and Morgan Stoddart from Llanelli Scarlets and not unsurprisingly he supports Liverpool FC and the Llanelli Scarlets.
Started at six
But it is golf which takes up the bulk of Jack’s time after he started playing golf at six years of age and immediately showing a flair for the game that is allied to a willingness to work hard in practice. He is a member of both South Pembs Golf Club and Tenby Golf Club and his current CONGU handicap is 22.
Jack is coached by Robert Ryder and regularly represents Pembroke Comprehensive School in golf at various Dyfed schools’ events as well as being a member of Dyfed ‘Under 14s’ golf squad after numerous top three finishes in Dyfed Junior competitions.
won a number of junior ‘club’ competitions and he also enjoys taking on dad Spencer and his younger brother Luke in a so-called friendly ‘match’ which invariably turns out to be highly competitive as all three love winning and having the ‘boasting rights’ in the Harries family.
Wide golfing experience
Unfortunately, Jack didn’t secure himself a place in the ‘Wee Wonders’ junior team but has still got to play numerous outstanding courses, both in this country and the USA, through his brothers’ success. All this has certainly widened jack’s experience and will surely serve him well in the future.
Jack certainly showed his prowess as he won the Wales and South-West qualifier at Caerphilly Golf Club in August to earn a place in the YMG Junior Masters National Final, which took place at Telford Golf Club in August.
Ask Jack about his current ambition and he would say it is to be involved somewhere with golf, either at a playing or coaching level. He is a level-headed young man who has already worked hard and is ready to be committed for as long as it takes – and will surely earn him a role in the world of golf in the future!
*Stop Press*
Jack came a very commendable 5th in his category in the recent National YMG PING Junior Masters Final in Telford, Shropshire. Well done Jack!
