Our rugby teams

With the new rugby season about to get under way we look around the clubs and forecast what sort of season they will have. Hopefully it will be a great year for Pembrokeshire rugby clubs in general!

Narberth RFC

Venue: Lewis Lloyd Ground
Nickname: The Otters
Coaches: Jonathan Dodd, assisted by Sean Gale (forwards), Clive James (backs) and Andy Barlow (fitness)
Team manager: Rob ‘Basher’ Lewis
Captain: Sean Brace
This Season’s Status: Division One (West)
Last Season’s Record:
3rd in Div One (West); P22 W17 D1 L4 Pts 79
566 pts for – 369 pts against
Our forecast: Will be looking to build on last year’s third spot and joined by several talented players from other local clubs so should feature in the top three again in this tough division.

Whitland RFC

Venue: Parc Llwyn Ty Gwyn
Nickname: The Borderers
Coaches: Domenico Setaro and Phil Morgan
Team manager: Frank Setaro
Captain: To be confirmed
This Season’s Status: Division One (West)
Last Season’s Record:
6th in Div One (West); P22 W10 D0 L12 Pts 48
395 pts for – 358 pts against
Our forecast: The Borderers will continue to do well with so many Pembrokeshire players and should again feature in the top half of the table.

Haverfordwest RFC

Venue: Merlins Bridge Ground
Nickname: The Blues
Coaches: Craig Jones, assisted by Andrew Thicker (forwards) and Steve Williams (backs)
Team manager: Simon Hughes
Captain: To be confirmed
This Season’s Status: Division Three (West)
Last Season’s Record:
8th in Div Three (West); P22 W9 D0 L13 Pts 42
307 pts for – 336 pts against
The Blues will have former stalwart players John Summons and Steve Brown as coaches in the youth team, with Steve O’Leary as team manager.
Our forecast: The Blues have new coaches and a good attendance at training – and should achieve a solid mid-table spot in this tough division.

Crymych RFC

Venue: Parc Lloyd Thomas
Nickname: The Preseli Men
Coaches: Lyn Williams (forwards), Elgan Vittle (Backs) and Gary Evans (fitness)
Team manager: Adrian Howells
Captain: Richard Llewellyn
This Season’s Status: Promoted to Division Three (West)
Last Season’s Record:
2nd in Div Four (West); P22 W15 D0 L7 Pts 70
500pts for – 323 pts against
Crymych have lost Carwyn Jones to Whitland and Aled Bowen to Narberth but will welcome back John Davies, the Welsh international prop, from Llanelli.
Our forecast: It will be hard going for Crymych in this higher division but if they can keep their squad it they should retain their division Three status.

Cardigan RFC

Venue: King George Vth Playing Fields
Nicknames: The Cardis or The Teifisiders
Coaches: Derek Burton & Adrian Varney
Team manger: Keith Phillips
Captain: Colin Davies
Current Status: Division Three (West) – Lost in end of season play-offs
Last Season’s Record:
2nd in Div Three (West); P22 W16 D1 L5 Pts 74
402 pts for – 220 pts against
Our forecast: The Cardis have lost centre Aled Jones to Whitland but should appear in the promotion race again with Colin Davies as an inspirational skipper.

Pembroke Dock Harlequins RFC

Venue: Bierspool
Nickname: The Quins
Coaches: Lenny Scourfield, Roy Davies & Colin Burton
Team Manager: Roy Scourfield
Captain: Gareth Scourfield
Current Status: Division Four (West) – Relegated last season
Last season’s record:
11th in Div Four (West): P22 W7 D0 L15 Pts 33
275 pts for – 531 against
New players – centre Gary Pickering from Pembroke and hooker Delme Thomas (Newport)
Our forecast: The Quins are hoping to bounce straight back after relegation last season and will have Mike and Lee Scourfield back in October – so if they can hold their own early on will be real contenders.

Tenby United

Venue: Heywood Lane
Nickname: The Seasiders
Coaches: Gareth Davies & Emori Katalau
Team manager: Russell Milns
Captain: To be confirmed
Current Status: Division Four (West)
Last season’s record:
4th in Div Four (West); P22 W13 D2 L7 Pts 60
364 pts for – 267 pts against
Our forecast: If Tenby United can play to their full potential they will be promoted but a lot depends on their ability to field a settled squad throughout a long campaign.

Pembroke RFC

Venue: Crickmarren
Nickname: The Scarlets
Coaches: Neil Machin, Clive Rowlands and Darrell Willington
Team manager: Rob Hayward
Captain: To be confirmed
Current Status: Division Four (West)
Last season’s record:
9th in Div Four (West); P22 W7 D2 L13 Pts 41
286 pts for – 453 pts against
Our forecast: Last season was disappointing for Pembroke and they will certainly build their way to a higher position, although whether they can become promotion contenders remains to be seen!

Milford Haven RFC

Venue: The Observatory Field (The Obs)
Nickname: The Mariners
Coaches: Alan McClelland and Lyn Lewis
Team Manager: Graham Bevans
Captain: Carl Allen
Current Status: Division Five (West) – Relegated last season
Last Season’s Record:
12th in Div Four (West): P22 W4 D1 L17 Pts 25
300 pts for – 597 against
Welcoming back Andrew Charnley (Neyland) and Darryl Jones (Haverfordwest)
Our forecast: The Mariners have so much young talent and if they can play to their potential they will certainly be promotion contenders under Alan McClelland!

Neyland RFC

Venue: The Athletic Ground
Nickname: The All Blacks
Coaches: Mark Hamer and John Greggain (fitness)
Team Manager: Martin Rees
Captain: Mark Chamberlain
Current Status: Division Five (West) – Relegated last season
Last Season’s Record: 11th in Div Four (West); P22  W6  D1  L15  31 pts
299 pts for – 597 pts against
Our forcast: If the All Blacks can get off to a good start, then come the end of the season they could be callenging for a promotion place.

Fishguard & Goodwick RFC

Venue: The Moors, Goodwick
Nickname: The Seagulls
Coaches: Alan Phillips & Huw Evans
Team Manager: Peter ‘Rocket’ Evans
Captain: Simon James
Current Status: Division Five (West)
Last Season’s Record:
7th in Div Five (West); P20 W9 D0 L11 Pts 43
261 pts for – 321 pts against
Our forecast: Huw Evans should be inspirational on and off the field but the Seagulls need to be far more consistent and be at full strength for away games if they are to do well. Otherwidse it will be mid-table for Alan Phillips’ boys.

Llangwm RFC

Venue: Pill Parks
Nickname: The Wasps
Coach: Phil Sutton
Team Manager: Alister Platten
Captain: Ian Griffiths
Current Status: Division Five (West)
Last Season’s Record:
8th in Div Five (West); P20 W7 D1 L12 Pts 43
325 pts for – 357 pts against
Our forecast: The Wasps are not the best of travellers but have some good players and an excellent coach in Phil Sutton. If they were to regularly have their best side they could seek promotion but we think mid-table is where they will end up again.

St Davids RFC

Venue: Fishguard Road
Nickname: The Saints
Coaches: Barry John & Fintan Godkin
Team Managers: Ken Broaders & Andrew Lamb
Captain: Phil Lamb
Current Status: Division Five (West)
Last Season’s Record:
9th in Div Five (West); P20 W9 D0 L11 Pts 39
256 pts for – 494 pts against
Our forecast: The Saints won more matches than ever last season and are as enthusiastic as ever under Barry John and Fintan Godkin – but they have such a small squad that they will do well to grab a mid-table spot.
